Totally Awesome 80s Party!

Share your own 80s party game or theme idea with us!

It's time to get truly outrageous with the decor! Here, a no-fail recipe:

1. Got neon? Round up anything you can find in bright colors. Ballooons, party streamers, paper plates and napkins. Now is the time to break out those hot pink and lime green streamers you've been saving.

2. Music played a huge role in the 80s. If you still own cassette tapes and vinyl records, bring them out and use them to create funky centerpieces. Fill bowls with cassette tapes or use album covers to decorate the tables. Use fishing wire to hang old records from the ceiling.

3. Cartoons and video games were also big for 80s babies. Choose a favorite character and use it as the theme for each table. One table can be covered in He-Man figurines, while another is strictly My Little Pony. Get creative, it'll be fun to reminisce.

Top off the party with a creative cake inspired by 80's pop culture.

Slang Cupcakes
Bake off a bunch of cupcakes, frost and use neon-colored icing to write out popular 80's slang words like: awesome, totally rad and relax.

Pac-Man Cake

Decorate a round cake using yellow frosting, then use black icing to draw out the iconic Pac-Man face. Make a second cake to resemble Ms. Pac-Man, topping it off with a ribbon tied in a bow. Then, surround the cakes with smaller cupcakes decorated to resemble red cherries!

Strawberry Shortcake Cake Pan
Lucky for you, so many old cartoon favorites are back! Take her back to her favorite cartoon character with Wilton's Strawberry Shortcake Cake pan. She's a bit more modern, but she'll love it all the same!

Part of the fun of this party will be re-living favorite moments from the 80s. For the 30-year-olds, that means cartoons, video games and music icons!

1. Who Am I?
Write down a favorite 80s pop icon on a sticky-back office label. Have everyone wear it on the back of their shirt (so they cannot see). Then, have guests mingle, asking questions about who they are. Here's a fun list to take you back:

  • Alf
  • Mr. T
  • Skeletor
  • Papa Smurf
  • Michael Jackson
  • Madonna
  • Max Headroom
  • She-Ra
  • Jem
  • Punky Brewster

2. Freeze Dance
Crank up an awesome 80s music playlist and have someone DJ. Everyone has to dance using cheesy 80s moves, of course, and then when the music stops, they must freeze! Anyone caught still grooving is out! Try this playlist:

1. Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, Cyndi Lauper
2. Thriller, Michael Jackson
3. Like a Virgin, Madonna
4. Jump, Van Halen
5. Shake Your Love, Debbie Gibson
6. You Give Love a Bad Name, Bon Jovi
7. Born in the U.S.A., Bruce Springstein
8. Ghostbusters, Ray Parker, Jr.
9. Walk Like an Egyptian, The Bangles
10. I Think We're Alone Now, Tiffany
