 40th and 50th Birthday Toasts
Toast Like a Pro!

Raising a glass to toast your friend or loved one on a milestone birthday is a fairly simple task.

Picking up a pen to write down words of wit, wisdom, or just the first line of a toast can seem almost impossible.

Relax, take a sip from your toasting glass, and use theses sample speeches as a guideline when you're called upon to say a few words at a 40th or 50th birthday party.

Fabulous 40th Birthday Toasts
This toast is sassy and sentimental with opportunities for you to modify the words for your guest of honor.

Make the toast specific by changing the name "Jill" to your celebrant's name, switching the "she" to "he" if you are toasting a man, and personalizing the lines as suggesting in the parentheses following the text.

Celebrate A Milestone Birthday!

50 is FAB!
Toast Sample:

40 used to be that "over the hill" age. Now all you hear is that "40 is fabulous"...seems like that phrase was written for Jill.

Jill is a rockstar, from the way she performs at work to how her friends always seem to have a fun story about her.

(Note: If your guest of honor doesn't work, talk about the role that is most important to him or her such as "from what a great mom she is...")

My best Jill story is about when we took a car trip to Arizona in the middle of summer and the air conditioning broke.

We were on a road for miles and had nothing to drink. Then we saw this gas station and pulled over to get water.

Unfortunately, we only had credit and ATM cards and this was a "cash only" place.

Jill talked the guy into giving us food and water in exchange for a song--she actually "sang for her supper."

(Note: Personalize this story for your guest of honor. Keep it brief, fun, and respectful as opposed to something that might be embarrassing.)

You have to wonder, what is it about a person that makes them so magnetic? What's that intangible quality that draws people in or makes them fun and easy to be around?

In Jill's case, it's that she attracts people by the great energy that she gives off.

Her enthusiasm for all things is almost infectious and always sincere whether she's asking you how your day was or telling you about her favorite new restaurant.

(Note: Personalize this according to the guest of honor's favorite pastime, whether it is going to restaurants or baseball games.)

Some may say that 40 is "over the hill," and all I can picture is Jill racing up a hill with friends, stopping to help someone if they fall, laughing her head off as they all roll down the other side, and then doing it again and again just like bunch of kids.

I can never see Jill losing that child-like spirit at any age in the future.

Please raise your glasses to Jill. She is fabulous, over the hill, over the top, and we are all over the moon about her!

Funny 50th Birthday Toast
This toast celebrates the guest of honor in an upbeat and inspirational way with some light ribbing about turning 50.

Tailor the toast to your guest of honor by swapping out the name "Bill" for your celebrant's name, changing the "he" to "she" if you are toasting a woman, and writing in personal achievements and anecdotes as suggested in the parentheses following the text.

Toast Sample:

Fifty: you think of that number in most capacities and it means "half." And it often feels that way -- half of one thing waiting for something else or even a portion of something left over.

However, this isn't true when it comes to age. Fifty years old is a milestone; a number to be contemplated, celebrated, and maybe even made fun of...just a little bit.

Bill is 50 today--just making sure everyone knows in case you missed it on the invitation, all over the room with the big "5-0" decorations everywhere, or in the event that he's lied to you about his age.

Count the candles on the cake, step back when we light them, and know where the fire exits are.

Bill's life is so full in so many ways that the half-hearted number 50 doesn't seem to apply to him.

So, we'll just say he's 1,000,000 and counting! Wrap your head around that one Bill -- makes 50 look like 5!

Bill is limitless. At work, he's a rising star, from the way he put together the Anderson deal and forged a great new business relationship for the company to how he always acknowledges the efforts of his co-workers.

(Note: Personalize this section with a work achievement or cite an accomplishment from an organization like the PTA or a charity.)

And, you couldn't find a more generous guy. His annual 4th of July barbecue has enough food to fill a football field and Bill is behind the grill during the whole party.

He's also generous with his time. It seems like he's on the soccer field with his kids as much as he's at work.

(Note: Personalize this section with specifics about one of your celebrant's best qualities.)

I'd have to say the same for Kathy (name of significant other). She's always there for Bill, the kids, her work with the school...it's what makes them work as a couple and a family.

(Note: Personalize this section with a brief mention of family and/or friends.)

There's only one way in which I feel that maybe Bill could be more generous, and this happens to be my birthday wish for you...well, actually for both of us.

I wish that you would let me win in poker, just once!

(Note: Personalize this section with a humorous recreational anecdote about a sport, such as golf or one's talent in the kitchen by saying, "I wish you would give me your recipe for Red Velvet Cake.")

Please raise your glasses to Bill. Here's to your millionth birthday, we'll call it 50.

May your life always be full of friends and family and may you continue to live without limits.

Cheers! You're one in a million my friend.
