Unlike speeches, the nature of a toast is to say a few quick words about the guest of honor, not to launch into a long-winded monologue.
Toasts are also usually followed by drinking, so a great way to end your toast is to raise your glass and say "Cheers."
It's a simple, suave way to let the other guests know your toast is over and that it's time to drink to the guest of honor.
Check out our "Birthday Toast Tips" section for simple ways to ensure a successful toast.
If you'd like to have a clever, pithy toast prepared for the birthday boy or girl, our list of the Best Birthday Toasts is just what you're looking for.

2. If you are receiving the birthday toast, you are actually not supposed to take a sip of your drink when the toast is done.
Doing so would mean that you are drinking to yourself, which is technically frowned upon by etiquette experts.
3. When someone gives a great personal toast at your birthday, you may reciprocate the toast by thanking them for their friendship and the great times you've shared.
4. If the birthday is a small, intimate dinner, there is no need to stand up to deliver the toast.
Standing to give the toast is necessary for large dinners and cocktail parties, however.
The goal is for the rest of the guests to be able to see you deliver your toast to the birthday guy or girl.
5. When toasting a man, it's okay to make slight jabs at his age. When toasting a woman, it's best to steer clear of age-related commentary altogether.

If you cheat, may you cheat death.
If you steal, may you steal a woman's heart.
If you fight, may you fight for a brother.
And if you drink, may you drink with me.

Well, that's no cause to pout,
Be glad that you have strength enough
To blow the damn thing out.
