Celebrating Cinco De Mayo With Cocktails
Red Sangria

Contrary to popular belief, Cinco De Mayo is not Mexican Independence Day. In fact, it commemorates the Mexican army's defeat of the French army at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862.

Here in America, Cinco de Mayo (Spanish for "Fifth of May") celebrations have also been quite important.

Not only do these celebrations pay homage to our Mexican-American compatriots, but that date in early May signals the start of spring - and it's a great excuse to get your friends together and sip some delicious Latin-inspired cocktails.

While we in Cocktail Therapy land advocate celebrating every holiday-big or small-there's nothing like throwing a party on May 5th to get family and friends in the mood for the warm weather ahead! So bring out the piñatas and pina coladas and give a toast to our neighbors down south!

In honor of its Latin American roots, we recommend filling your Cinco de Mayo revelers with all manner of cerveza, burritos, and fajitas. And of course a little Cocktail Therapy never hurt anyone.

See below for our own brand of felicidades Mexicanas, by way of Spain: Red Sangria.

Salud!

Ingredients
  • 1 Bottle of Red Wine (it doesn’t have to be expensive, but it should be tasty—choose any reasonably-priced Spanish red that you would drink by itself)

  • Chopped or Sliced Orange, Lemon, and Apple

  • 1 Tablespoon Sugar (or two packets of Splenda for those calorie-watchers!)

  • 3 Generous Splashes each of rum, triple sec, and brandy

  • 1 Long Splash of Fresh Orange Juice

  • 1 Splash of Fresh Lime Juice

Steps
  • In a big bowl, pour the three liquors over the fruit, allowing the fruit to absorb the liquor for up to eight hours.

  • When it’s ready to go, pour the wine into a pitcher filled halfway with ice, add the sugar, and stir until it’s dissolved.

  • Pour the “drunken fruit” to the wine mixture, then add the orange juice and lime juice. Stir together and serve.

Cocktail Therapy tip: one glass of sangria has about 200 calories less than a margarita!
