Tis the season for parties, and throwing one can drain your holiday budget. If you want to host an enjoyable and festive Christmas party on a budget, first break down the party into manageable categories like the four below. Then focus on ways to save money in each.

As you plan each aspect of the Christmas party, choose a color scheme or graphic element (snowflake, ornament, candy cane, etc.) to use throughout. This ties everything together leaving with you with a cohesive, budget-friendly look. It also cuts down party shopping to find items that fit within these limits, leaving you plenty of money for gift giving.

Because they give a glimpse of what to expect, invitations are important to creating a successful party. Unfortunately, they can be expensive. Here are some ways to keep costs down and still send the perfect invitations.
  • Stick with a simple graphic using the party’s color scheme.
  • Do not worry about fancy letterpress. Choose flat fill-in cards you write yourself.
  • Consider boxed sets sold at discount department stores like Target. They can be a stylish and affordable option.

The easiest way to save money on food is to forgo a sit-down dinner or huge buffet. While everyone else hosts cocktail parties, have coffee and dessert instead. Set up a coffee bar to accompany an assortment of cakes, cookies and other decadent treats.

For the coffee bar, start with freshly brewed coffee (regular and decaf). You might also add hot chocolate for non-coffee drinkers. Then, supply a selection of flavored creamers and liqueurs to encourage creative mixing.

Sending guests home with a party memento may seem challenging on a budget – especially if the guest list is extensive. You don’t have to spend a lot, however, to make them happy. If possible, stay with your color scheme, and wrap dollar store purchases, handmade gifts or baked goods in nice paper tied with a pretty bow. Sometimes the packaging is just as nice as what is inside.

Decorating for a Christmas party can cause a spending frenzy. With these simple tips, it doesn't have to.
  • Before buying any Christmas decorations for the party, assess your personal decor to find items that fit within your chosen color scheme or theme.
  • Use party ware to add color and to personalize the party. Find customized napkins and coasters for a reasonable price at several online retailers.
  • Add greenery for a seasonal touch. Many Christmas tree vendors give away cuttings, which you can collect for DIY garlands and wreaths.
  • Finish with flowers for pops of festive color. Carnations are a chic and cheap choice.
