Colorful icing will be the glue holding all of the decorations to the cookies. A basic royal icing mixed with a little food coloring will do the trick.

Plan for at least three batches of icing: one red, one green and one white.

Ingredients
  • 1 Lbs confectioner's sugar

  • 2 Tbsp powdered egg whites

  • 6-7 Tbsp water

  • 1 Tsp food coloring

Steps
  • In a bowl using an electric mixer on low, beat together all of the ingredients until smooth

  • Increase the mixer speed to high and continue beating until stiff peaks form.

  • If preparing the night before, put icing into plastic containers and place in refrigerator.

Preparation Time: 10-15 Minutes
Serves: Not Applicable

Tips

No matter what type of kid's party your hosting, once your little guests arrive, they'll be ready for action so it's smart to do as much of the preparation as you can the night before.

  • Bake off batches of cookies the night before using you favorite sugar or gingerbread cookie recipe. Plan for four cookies per child, plus extras to cover any breakage.
  • Cut out the cookies using cookie cutters in fun shapes like candy canes, ornament balls, stars and traditional gingerbread girls and boys.

We love the idea of sending an invite that's cute and useful!

Preparation
  • For a fast and easy

invitation, make a copy of your favorite holiday cookie for each guest.

Steps
  • For each invite, cut out and glue your cookie invite to one side of a flat 5 x7 piece of colored cardstock and decorate with stickers.

  • Use a marker to jot down all of the party details on the back of the invite.

  • Have your child hand-deliver the invites to his pals or pop them in the mail.

You've got the cookies and the icing, time for the candy! Gather a fun mix of traditional and unique candies.

  • Sprinkles: Choose a multi-colored mix for kids who want their cookies covered in a rainbow of color.
  • Red Shoestring licorice: Cut up licorice into smaller pieces to make

hair and a smile on gingerbread girls and boys.
  • Gumdrops: These make dazzling jewels on a frosted ornament-ball shaped cookie.
  • Mini Marshmallows: Leave as whole or cut in half and add to a white frosted star-shaped cookie.  If you you're looking to have more fun, try making your own marshmallows!

Preparation
  • To keep party chaos to a minimum, give each child their own workstation that includes a placemat and clean paintbrushes to apply the icing.

Also, be sure to set the candy out down the center of the table so everyone can share.

Steps
  • Let the kids have at it decorating their cookies. Just be sure to stay close by with lots of paper towels!
