Great 40th and 50th Birthday Gag Gifts and Cake Toppers
1. 50 Sucks

This clever double entendre can be used as either a gag gift or a cake topper. For a gag gift, collect fifty lollipops and a flower pot. Stuff the flower pot with foam and insert the lollipops into the top of the foam. Use a permanent marker to write "50 Sucks" on the flower pot and tie it up with a bow for a cute and funny gag gift.

To create a cake topper, simply insert the lollipop sticks into the top of the birthday cake - voila! The perfect gag topper for a 50th birthday.

2. Instant Hair Hat

If you know a balding man who is turning forty or fifty, the Instant Hair Hat will get a good laugh. To make your own Instant Hair Hat, mix one part fuzzy gray fabric with one part visor. Cut the fuzzy gray fabric out in a circular shape that fits inside the top of a Velcro-back sun visor. Secure the faux fabric toupee inside the visor with fabric glue and allow to dry. This gag gift gives a whole new meaning to the term ‘hat hair.'

3. Over the Hill Cake Topper

On top of the cake, make a large mound with frosting. Using decorator's frosting with a fine round pastry bag tip, draw an arrow pointing to the mound and label it "The Hill." Find a small figurine like a LEGO person and place it on one side of the hill's slope, as it if were walking away from the hill. Then, use the frosting to label the figurine with an arrow that says "You are Here."

4. Retirement Clock

The retirement countdown clock is a great birthday gag gift for the 40 or 50 year old workaholic. It will remind them that their days of slaving away are numbered, and get them thinking about what they want to do with their life in the golden years. If you are having a large cake, the retirement clock can also be used as a humorous cake topper.

5. Toast to Regularity

Instead of bringing a great bottle of champagne for the birthday guy or girl's 50th birthday, give the gift of regularity. Simply big the largest size bottle of prune juice you can find at the store, and use a nice satin ribbon to tie a champagne glass to the front of the bottle.

Either in the birthday card or after you give your gift, propose a ‘toast to your health.' When the rest of the birthday gifts see what your gift is, the room will dissolve in a fit of laughter.

For a cake topper along these same lines, place a trio of prunes on the top layer of the birthday cake. Depending on your taste, you can also write "Turning 40 (or 50) is a Gas" on the cake with frosting, just below the prune topper.
