The grocery store produce section is so festive during the holiday season!
While we may be able to identify the seasonal version of year-round staples like crab apples or petite pumpkins, there are some harvest goods that we may not be able to name.
Since many holiday recipes call for specific nuts, I thought a quick primer on classic nuts and what they look like, in and out of their shell, would be helpful to those who may need a reminder about the difference between a Filbert and a Brazil nut.

Walnuts are probably the most identifiable in a line-up or bulk bin of nuts. Walnuts are very popular on a holiday table adding natural beauty to garlands and a tasty touch to recipes.

Brazil nuts are dark brown with a hard shell and large creamy nut inside. While there are not many holiday recipes that use this nut as an ingredient, it is almost always included in the collection of bulk nuts at the grocery store and could be a last minute substitution for Macadamia nuts.

Hazelnuts, also known as Filberts, are little elegant balls with a shiny shell finish. While the nut meat is sometimes used in recipes, the flavor of the Hazelnut is quite popular in coffee creams and liqueurs such as Franjelico.

Almond shells are light brown with tiny holes. Almonds are one of the most popular nut meats used in recipes and can usually be found shelled (without their shell) in various forms, such as slivered or chopped, in the baking section of your grocery store.
