 New Year's Masquerade Party

With glamour, glitter and a little bit of mystery, masquerade parties are the perfect way to guarantee a unique, fun-filled New Year's Eve. Part of the allure of a masquerade themed party is that all your New Year's guests get to slip into character without worrying about wearing a full-on costume; heightening the festive feeling.

Plus, a masquerade party has so many common decor elements with a traditional New Year's Eve bash that pulling it all together is nearly effortless. With a few ornate masks, a sprinkle of glitter and a dash of gold, you can throw a themed New Year's party to remember.

New Year's Masquerade Party Cocktails
A signature champagne-based cocktail or two is a welcome addition to a well-stocked party bar. A few of our favorites that fit the festive New Year's ambiance include:

New Year's Masquerade Cocktail Stirrers

Add pizzazz to your cocktails and other beverages with your own mini masquerade mask drink stirrers. Here's how:

1. Use a butterfly paper punch to cut out small silver and gold shapes from scrapbook paper.

2. With a thin black pen, draw on the almond-shaped black eye holes for each butterfly cutout, transforming them into mini butterfly-shaped masquerade masks.

3. Secure two back-to-back masks to a drink stirrer using a hot glue gun or gluestick. Affix them off to one side of the stirrer so the stick looks like a masquerade mask handle.

New Year's Eve Masquerade Party Decorations
Masquerades have a long tradition in the party circuit, dating back to the Italian Renaissance. Throughout the last 600 years, masked parties have experienced popular resurgence in a number of cultures throughout Europe and the Americas. Today, masquerade parties still hold their own in popular culture. From the Phantom of the Opera to an episode of Gossip Girl, masquerade parties remain a party theme of choice for social butterflies. Borrowing from history, tradition and pop culture, our New Year's masquerade party decorations are a cinch to pull together, but still make an impact.

Masquerade Party Balloons

If you live in a home, grab your guests attention from when they first arrive. Order four oversized (3' round) balloons in gold, and tie them into a bunch - each balloon at varying height - with black lace ribbon. If you have good handwriting, consider writing "2009" on one balloon and writing "Happy", "New" and "Year's" on the remaining three balloons. Not only will this help guests locate your home, it will get them excited about the party before they even step foot in your door.

Masquerade Party Tablescapes

  • Create visually arresting tablescapes for your New Year's masquerade party by renting deep gold tablecloths from a local rental company. Add a black lace overlay or thick runner on top of the gold tablecloth for a luxurious, rich effect.
  • Add drama and texture by adding floral centerpieces to the food and dessert tables. If you are doing the arrangements yourself, mix dark colored roses with black dahlias, purple artichokes and gold spray painted curly willow. Wrap square or cylindrical vases with a thick swatch of the black lace and pin it together with a bejeweled brooch.
  • Place floral foam in the center of a short square container and wedge the sticks of masquerade masks into the foam. Arrange so the masks fall at different heights and group in odd numbers - three masks arranged together or five masks arranged together look the most eye-catching. Once the masks are arranged in their final position, cover the foam with grey or black reindeer moss, or a few black dahlia blooms inserted into the foam to keep them in place. Create a few of these mask centerpieces to use on the tables or other focal points of the party area.
  • For guests who forget to bring a mask, make an extra large version of this centerpiece with 5 to 7 masks, and frame a note inviting guests without a mask of their own to pick a mask to wear for the evening.

Create festive, unique invitations for your New Year's Eve masquerade party:

    1. Purchase flat paper masquerade masks in bulk from a party supply store.

    2.  Have a calligrapher hand-write the party information on the blank back of the mask. Be sure to encourage guests to arrive in formal cocktail party attire with their own masquerade mask.

    3. To send, place the masque invitation inside a poster tube wrapped in a pretty metallic paper (use holiday wrapping paper for a budget-friendly solution, or fancy scrapbook paper to make the invite extra special).

    4. Before sealing and sending, add a handful of New Year's Eve themed confetti inside the poster tube along with a party blower for a fun touch. No one will be able to turn down such a fabulous party invite.
