Popcorn Cupcake Centerpieces
These adorable cupcake centerpieces are perfect for an Oscar award show party. They evoke the tradition of movie theatre popcorn and taste delicious.
Ingredients
  • 1 Lbs of small white marshmallows

  • 1 bottle of yellow food dye

  • 2 Whole tubs of whipped cream cheese

  • 1 Cup Super fine Baking Sugar

  • 1 box of yellow or lemon cake mix

  • 1 Whole stick of whipped butter

Steps
  • Follow instructions on the cake mix box to create 2 dozen cupcakes. Allow them to cool completely before decorating.

  • To mix the frosting, put the cream cheese, butter and sugar into a large bowl. Fold ingredients together well using a spatula.

  • Add enough yellow food coloring to the frosting to create an overall light yellow color.

  • Frost each cupcake liberally with the yellow cream cheese frosting.

  • Add the mini marshmallows on top of each cupcake. Arrange the marshmallows randomly in mounds so they look like popcorn pieces.

  • Place a filler in the popcorn bucket to take up some of the internal volume (this could be a styrofoam florist square, a dishtowel, or anything else you have handy). Place a plate that fits within the popcorn bucket on top of the filler, and begin stacking your cupcakes. Don't stack them more than two deep or the bottom ones will get crushed. Arrange them so they are popping out of the top of the popcorn bucket (see picture).

  • Arrange three popcorn buckets with the popcorn cupcakes in the middle of a large silver platter. Leave a few cupcakes out on the platter to mimic popcorn that has overflowed out of the buckets.

Preparation Time: 25-45 Minutes

Create a Champagne Coupe Tower
Create a glamorous champagne tower for your awards show party to create a beautiful focal spot.

How To Build a Champagne Tower:

1. Begin by choosing a very sturdy surface on which to build your tower. Do not use uneven tables that rock or will move if gently bumped into.

2. Using coupe champagne glasses (the type with the wide round opening, not flutes), create a bottom row in the shape of a square. Place all of the glasses so they are touching each other.  If done right you should see a small diamond shape of space between the glasses.

3. Once you've completed the bottom square (the foundation), use one less glass on each length of the next row. For example, if your bottom row was 6 glasses x 6 glasses, use 5 glasses x 5 glasses on the next row up. Place the center of each glass bottom on top of the small diamond space to ensure that the glass is fully supported.

4. Keep going until there is only one champagne couple balanced at the top of your tower.

5. Carefully pour champagne into the top glass until it overflows into the glasses below it. Keep adding champagne until all of the glasses are filled. Keep a towel on the floor beneath the table until the glassesa are filled to catch any overflow spillage.

6. If a tower of glass makes you nervous, just use plastic champagne coupes. Ironically though, the lack of weight on the plastic coupes make the tower more likely to topple if knocked into, so choose wisely.

Swanky Award Party Decor

For an upscale, swanky event offer lots of little appetizers for guests to nibble on. Most importantly, create your delicious spread in a visually appealing way. It will serve as food and decor:

1. Food That Looks Too Good To Eat:

Use simple white stacked cakestands, serving platters and cupcake stands to vary the height of the appetizers and show them off in unique ways.

2. Fabulous Florals:

Decorate the table with white flowers tightly packed into low square vases wrapped in ti leaves.Good options for these flowers are spider mums, roses, peonies, and hydrangeas.

3. Add Some Sparkle:

Buy a long string of big faux crystals at a jewelry district or local wholesale store, and cut each crystal off the strand one by one. Collect all the individual crystals in a pile.

Scatter the crystals along the table to add a sparkle to your decorations. Finish off the swanky look by adding plenty of small tealights as well as tall crystal candelsticks or candelabras with long white candles. The crystals, candlesticks and glow of candlelight will give your table a vintage glam appeal - perfect for your own homage-to-Hollywood event.

    Award Themed Popcorn
     Award Themed Popcorn

Everyone loves cupcakes, and these are on-theme, budget-friendly and pretty enough to serve as a centerpiece. What could be better?

    Old Fashioned Popcorn-Style Cupcakes

    1. Stock up on movie theater popcorn buckets (order these from Plum Party or pick up one the next time you go to the movies with friends, and ask for extra buckets to split up the popcorn in. Then, save the extras and use them for your party.).

    2. Create delicious yellow-marshmallow covered cupcakes that look just like popcorn to place popping out of the popcorn bucket (cupcake idea from the Hello Cupcake book). See our recipe section for full instructions on creating these fun little desserts.

    3. Use the popcorn cupcakes as the centerpiece for your food table during the party. They look so much like fake popcorn that guests might be fooled entirely!

Create unique DIY invitations shaped like an Awards statue.

      Preparation
      • Supplies:

        - Gold Cardstock (one sheet of paper for every guest you plan to invite, plus extras for mistakes)

        - Scissors

        - Computer & Printer

        - Glue Stick or Double Stick Tape

      Steps
      • Find an outline online of the awards statue. Save it as a JPEG, then enlarge it to fit on a 8.5 x 11 inch piece of paper and print it out.

      • Insert the gold card stock into your printer tray and print out as many invitations as you need.

      • Create a Word document with all of the information for your party. Move the text around so it fits in your Oscar statue silhouette when cut out. Print out one for each invitation and paste onto the back of the Oscar cardstock with a glue stick or double-stick tape.

Or, if you have neat handwriting, simply write the information out on each invitation to save the hassle of formatting the Word document text to fit.

Let your guests be the academy and pick their own list of winners and reward the person who best picks the talent.

      The "Be the Academy" Game:

      1. Before your party, research the main categories and nominees.

      2. Create a worksheet with the name of each category and a blank line for your guests to write their pick for the winner.

      3. Photocopy as many sheets as needed so each guest has one to fill out. Hand it to them when they arrive and ask them to fill it out and drop it in a ballot box (just a box covered in wrapping paper with a long slit in the top) by the door.

      4. Once all the winners have really been announced on TV, open your ballot box to determine who picked the most correct winners - the guest who has chosen the most real winners gets a prize of some sort. Don't forget to ask the winner to do an acceptance speech when receiving their prize!.
