Who lives in a pineapple under the sea?
The most loveable sea creature in the world of animation: SpongeBob SquarePants!
A SpongeBob Birthday Party is a popular theme for boys and girls and super easy to do -- did someone say, "luau?"
From decking out your party with tropical decor to creating a Candy Treasure Chest Birthday Cake guests will be there or be square!
Turn a store-bought cake into a Candy Treasure Chest Birthday Cake overflowing with chocolate coins, gummy fish, and a little SpongeBob SquarePants!
- 9x13-inch chocolate cake from a grocery store bakery with chocolate frosting
- 2 to 3 cans chocolate frosting
- 1 can white frosting
- Blue food coloring
- Yellow, red, and blue colored fondant
- Assorted candy: gold foil-covered chocolate coins, gummy fish, candy necklaces, Tootsie Rolls, SpongeBob candies, etc...
- Spongebob cake figure or candle
- Additional Materials:
- Large cake board
- @9x6 1/2-inch block dry floral foam
- Aluminum foil
- @8-inch bamboo skewers
- Mini star cookie or canapé cutters
- Mix blue food coloring with white frosting to make an ocean blue color. Ice the cake board.
- Cut 9x13-inch cake in half to make two 9x6 1/2-inch cakes. If your store-bought cake has icing decorations on top scrape them off.
- Place a 9x6 1/2-inch cake in the center of the iced cake board. Ice the top of the cake with the chocolate frosting and place the other 9x6 1/2 -inch cake on top.
- Ice the entire cake with chocolate frosting. Use a bamboo skewer or a fork to create lines in the frosting that resemble the wood grain on a treasure chest.
- Use a knife to round the top of the floral foam to make the treasure chest lid proportionate to your cake. Wrap the lid completely with foil. Ice the entire surface of the lid with chocolate frosting and create the wood grain like you did in the cake.
- Insert 2 bamboo skewers into the bottom of the lid near the center. Position the lid on top of the cake. Slide the skewers into the cake to hold the lid in place. (The candy on top will also help to keep it open and in place.)
- Add candy to the top of the cake and overflowing down the sides as in the picture. Place gummy fish and candy on the cake board around the base of the treasure chest. Press down on the candy if necessary or use more frosting to help keep the candy in place. Plop a SpongeBob figure or candle in the candy.
- Roll out yellow fondant and cut 1-inch wide strips to make the straps on the treasure chest. Trim the strips to fit on your cake (see photo) and apply with a dab of water on the back of the strips to secure. Roll out the red and blue fondant and cut out shapes with a mini star cookie cutter to make accents on the yellow strips. Refrigerate until its time to serve!

SpongeBob in a Bottle Invitations
- Purchase mini (1 ½" tall) SpongeBob figures.
- Pick up colored sand and small plastic bottles with cork stoppers from a craft store; buy one for each invitation. Make sure the opening of the bottle is wide enough to fit the SpongeBob figures.
- Add a little sand and a mini SpongeBob into each bottle.
- Write the party info on a small piece of paper. Roll up the paper and tie raffia or thin ribbon around the paper to keep it closed; insert it in the bottle.
- Make the outside of the bottle festive with a SpongeBob party sticker. Go to Nickjr.com for a bunch of party printables. Print the images on label paper to make custom stickers or create tags to tie around the necks of the bottles. Place the SpongeBob in a Bottle invitations in a padded envelope or cardboard mailing tube and send to guests.

Make tabletop cards or signs to put near each food item.
Search online for the specific character's image and print it on to cardstock.
Then print the party food name next to the image and place it on the table.
- Crabby Patties - SpongeBob is a fry cook at the Krusty Krab with an insatiable appetite for "Crabby Patties," which are basically hamburgers. Sliders or mini hamburgers are the perfect food to serve at your party.
- Patrick's Star Sandwiches - Use star-shaped cookie cutters to stamp out peanut butter and jelly sandwiches that resemble Patrick.
- Sandy's Soda and Beverages - Slap a sign on a big plastic tub full of ice and beverages for a Sandy the Squirrel watering hole.
- Gary the Snail's Snack Pails - Purchase new plastic sand pails and fill them with goldfish, pretzels, and other salty favorites as Gary's snack pail.

SpongeBob is a total party sea animal and you'll find hoards of awesome decorations and supplies with his image on it. Take your party over the edge by combining SpongeBob party items with luau décor.
Under the Sea Water Walls and Ceiling
- Start your decor by turning the party space into an under water paradise. Hang ocean blue water scene-setters on as many walls as possible around the party.
- Help your child create large cut out fish from poster board, schools of fish, and colorful marine life to tape to the water walls.
- Float blue helium balloons above the crowd along with a few Mylar fish balloons.
- Finish it off with a Mylar SpongeBob and Patrick balloon flying high!
Luau Decorations
- Step foot into any party store and you'll find rows of luau decorations most any time of the year.
- Go for the classics like grass skirting around tables, tropical lights, and of course leis for the guests.
- Make a big splash with an inflatable tiki hut!
- Pick up fun items like colorful drink straws and pineapple cups to pay tribute to SpongeBob's home.
SpongeBob Beach Signs
- Post beach signs around the party space or attach a bamboo stick to the back of the signs and stake them in the yard. (You can also insert the stick into a bucket of sand to keep them upright.)
- Include a "Welcome to Bikini Bottom" sign and a "Krusty Krab" sign near the food table.
- Hang a custom beachy birthday banner front and center!
SpongeBob Party Supplies
- Show your love of the sponge with Spongebob SquarePants party supplies like platters, cake plates, and napkins.
- Pack favor bags with SpongeBob trinkets and stickers. Or fill a sand pail with beach-themed toys.
- Don't forget party-size bubbles for each guest to blow at the party. SpongeBob is famous for his special bubble-blowing technique!

Sponge Toss into a Blow-up Pineapple
- Purchase yellow kitchen sponges (without the green scrubber on the back).
- Buy an inflatable pineapple drink cooler or two online.

- Consider making the sponges look like Spongebob by gluing felt eyes, a red tie, brown square pants, and all features on to the sponges. (Perfect party prep craft for the birthday child!)
Jellyfish Limbo
- Purchase small rubber jellyfish toys and hang them from a limbo stick.
- To play the game, 2 adults hold the stick as the kids dance under it to music.
