When children work on art projects related to Thanksgiving Day, they receive several benefits. Not only do they have the opportunity to create, kids also get to learn about the history of Thanksgiving and get the chance to say thanks for the people and things around them. There is no need for elaborate crafts or expensive supplies. These four Thanksgiving art projects start with basic items most little artists probably already have in their supply kit.
- Paper (construction, cardstock, etc)
- Scissors
- Crayons or colored pencils
- Stickers or other embellishments
- Kid-friendly paints
- Glue

You send cards for Christmas, Mother's Day, Father's Day and maybe Easter. Why not Thanksgiving, too? It is the perfect opportunity for kids to tell a grandparent, older relative or special friend they are thankful for them.
Steps
- Use paper folded in half or buy a pack of blank cards with envelopes.
- Let kids draw pictures and decorate the cards.
- Help them with writing if needed, or print copies of a Thanksgiving poem or prayer they can simply glue to the card.

The shape of little kid hands make perfect feathers. Add the outline of feet and you have a turkey that is just their size. Not only is this craft good for learning about the popular Thanksgiving bird, when made year after year, it is a creative way to compare how much children have grown between holidays. There are different versions of this project around the web, but here are basic instructions from AmazingMoms.com. Display the turkeys on a bulletin board or string a bunch of them together as garland. They will be a conversation starter among holiday guests.
Preparation
Supplies:
- construction paper in brown, black, orange, red, yellow , white
- scissors
- glue
- wiggle eyes, optional
Steps
- Make the turkey tail feathers by tracing your child's hand on colored paper and cut out 6-8 times in a variety of colors.
- For the turkey body, trace feet (shoes on) and cut from paper.
- Glue the two feet together, spreading them slightly apart at the bottom.
- Glue the "tail feathers" to construction paper overlapping them, to take on the appearance of feathers.
- Glue the "body" on top. Add a few more hands if you want.Attach wiggle eyes. Cut and glue or draw paper beak, wattle and feet.

A list of Thanksgiving art projects is incomplete without one involving pilgrims or Native Americans. Making Indian headdresses inspires creativity with kids because they must use their imaginations. With some photographs you provide as examples, kids can freely create a headdress as plain or as fancy as they wish. In addition to basic art supplies, you may want to have beads, ribbon and feathers on hand to help fulfill their imaginations. When completed, the headdresses make great props for after-dinner skits.
Steps
- Help each child cut a strip of stiff paper that will fit around his or her head. (Use a tape measure to get the length.)
- Encourage kids to draw, glue and embellish the paper to get the look they want.

A project even the youngest of crafters can do, these paper pumpkins from DLTK Crafts fit in throughout the season, not just at Thanksgiving. Let them have fun, let them get messy, and do not expect perfection. When kids are finished making their stuffed pumpkins, use fishing line to hang them above your dinner table or carefully place them in a basket for an imperfectly casual centerpiece.
Preparation
Supplies:
- pape
- scissors
- stapler
- finger paint (or tempra paint and brush) in orange and green
- cotton balls or shredded newspaper
Steps
- Draw two pumpkins making them the same size.
- Let children paint the templates with their fingers or with the brush and tempra paints. Allow to dry.
- Cut out the pumpkins. (Adults may need to help with this step)
- Staple all the way around the edge of the pumpkins leaving an opening at the top.
- Stuff pumpkins with shredded paper.
- Finish stapling the pumpkin closed.
