Vintage Wizard of Oz Baby Shower
The Wizard of Oz

A baby shower inspired by the classic children's story, "The Wizard of Oz," is a great way to celebrate any soon-to-be mom. Incorporating elements from both the original story and the famous film will dress your party in beautiful vintage style. Best of all, this concept works for boys, girls and surprise babies!

"Somewhere Over the Rainbow" Cupcakes
These colorful cupcakes are easier to make than you think and guests will be reminded of the classic song Judy Garland sings as Dorothy just before she's sent over the rainbow.

We recommend making the colors more of a pastel shade to keep with the baby and vintage vibe, but feel free to go as bright as the mom-to-be would like! Just be sure to finish them off with white icing and these ruby red slipper ring picks or these vintage character ones.

"Wizard of Oz" Invitations
Invite guests to this baby shower with one of these themed designs.

Follow the yellow brick road... combine the movie’s famous setting with the vintage, illustrated feel of the book with this invitation.

Looking for something a bit more vintage or closer to the story? Opt for a design like this one from Etsy.com or this card from zazzle.com that depicts the famous cover illustration from L. Frank Baum’s book.

Save on paper and postage by creating your own online invitation. You can choose your favorite still from the movie or illustration from the book, or even upload your own personal picture.

Keep the menu light and serve the usual baby shower recipes, but with a "Wizard of Oz" twist.
Cupcakes and a Cookie Bar: Along with your "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" cupcakes, treat guests to a one-of-a-kind cookie bar. It's one of the easiest ways to stay with a themed dessert menu. Cookies come in all kinds of shapes, sizes and styles so all you have to do is shop around a bit. Here are a few ideas to get you started:

  • "Lions and tigers and bears, oh my!" Find cookie cutters in these shapes and bake a few batches of sugar cookies, then decorate.
  • Rainbow cookies are perfect for this party.
  • Cookie sandwiches with red jelly filling.

If you do decide to serve guests with a meal, opt for a Southern style menu.  Dorothy may travel to Oz, but she comes from Kansas. Barbeque is the easiest option.  Not only does food cook quickly, it’s packed with tons of tasty flavors and just about anything can be grilled.

Heart shaped foods are a great way to honor Tin Man.

  • Cookie cutters aren't just for your cookie bar. Use heart-shaped ones in several different sizes to cut sandwiches.
  • Take it to the next level by making heart-shaped ice cubes and place them in ruby red punch (the non-alcoholic version, of course!).

Colors play an important part in the Wizard of Oz, especially the movie version. Use ruby red, emerald green and yellow to inspire the dishes you serve. You can keep it simple or get super creative, just use the personality of the mom-to-be as your guide!

This theme presents a ton of ways to decorate the party space, so don't just stick to the usual. Deck your venue in chic style that incorporates the colors and settings from the book and movie.

  • Cover tables with blue and white checkered cloths in honor of Dorothy's famous frock.
  • Not many people know this, but the original color of the Wicked Witch's shoes were silver, not red! Whichever you prefer, use one color for your tableware and the other for your napkins.
  • Tin pots or wicker baskets filled with bright yellow sunflowers are the perfect centerpieces. One reminds us of the lovable Tin Man, the other of Dorothy's cute carry along.
  • The dessert bar should be set up before the party so that it can serve as a decoration throughout. Stage your rainbow cupcakes and all your cookies on a long table. Opt for a yellow fabric runner down the center of the table to mimic the yellow brick road.
  • Set up a space for gifts and place a sign or banner above it saying, "Munchkin Supplies." If the gender of the baby is known, this is a great spot to showcase that. In the movie version of "The Wizard of Oz," Dorothy and Toto meet many munchkins with unique personalities. If it's a girl, ballerina shoes would be perfect. For a boy, lollipops.
  • Don't just decorate the inside of your party space! Be sure to greet guests with thematic elements as soon as they arrive. Color random yellow squares on the pathway leading to the party entrance with sidewalk chalk.
  • Post a sign at the beginning of the pathway saying, "Follow the Yellow Brick Road!" Purchase an inexpensive scarecrow and stand him up in the center of the lawn on the way. Hang an emerald green sign on the party entryway saying, "Welcome to Oz."

    Make-Over Magic
When they arrive at Oz, Dorothy, Scarecrow, Tin Man and Cowardly Lion all receive makeovers. Skip the usual baby shower games and have guests made over. Hire a few amateur makeup artists, hairdressers and manicurists and have them give guests makeovers of their own!

Send guests home with a small token of appreciation. Big, colorful lollipops tied off with a ribbon showing the shower's date and honoree's name are easy and fun.

If your budget is a bit larger, why not present guests with ruby red slippers of their own? Say no to a cute heeled shoe like Dorothy's though, and go for the comfier style.
