Anniversary Gift Guide: 1st through 50th - What to Give for Landmark Anniversaries
Surprise your spouse With an anniversary gift they'll always remember

Oddly enough, it's often hardest to buy presents for the people we know the best. This can ring especially true when it comes to our spouses - we know them inside out yet draw a blank when it comes to an anniversary gift.

We've created a great list of modern gift ideas based on traditional anniversary present etiquette for the first, fifth, tenth, twenty-fifth and fiftieth wedding anniversary.

One Year Anniversary
Nothing beats paper, especially for a one-year anniversary.
Traditional Gift: Paper

Make It Modern: The idea of giving your significant other paper

might not sound exciting, but there are actually quite a few cool

options. Consider the following:

  • Framed Print - A framed print of something your loved one

enjoys. Is he an avid golfer? Frame a beautiful watercolor or poster of

a top golf course for his office. Does she watch "Breakfast at

Tiffany’s" over and over? Consider a print from the film. Find a huge selection from Art.com, then pick a matching frame in person at your local framing store to ensure it's one of a kind.

  • Personalized Stationary - Order personalized stationary

with your spouse’s name written in letterpress (perhaps in his or her

favorite color) with coordinating envelopes. It’s useful, and you can

add to the gift by getting a nice pen for him or her to use for writing

    correspondence.

Five Year Anniversary
Wood is symbolic of peace and earth, maybe that's why it's a perfect idea for a five-year anniversary.

Traditional Gift: Wood

Make It Modern:

  • Wooden Jewelry or Watch Box - A lacquered wooden box

will look lovely sitting on your dresser, and you can place a piece of

jewelry (cufflinks or a watch) inside to complement the present.
  • Hardwood Floors - It may not be the most romantic idea, but

it's a gift you'll enjoy for decades to come - it also improves the

value of your home! Teragren hardwood floors are made from sustainable bamboo, and come with a twenty-five year warranty.

Ten Year Anniversary
Unlike the tin man in The Wizard of Oz, I'm sure you can find a heart with your tin gift.

Traditional Gift: Tin / Aluminum

Make It Modern: This is a tough one, so many couples are

abandoning it in favor of giving diamonds. But, here are two ideas that

cover both gifts:

  • Coffee or Tea Tin

    - Keep with tradition by gifting your coffee (or tea) fiend a large tin

of his or her favorite gourmet brand. Make it even more special by

purchasing a new coffee or espresso machine the two of you can use to

    enjoy the coffee!
  • Diamond Jewelry - A classic pair of cufflinks with a diamond

accent is perfect for a guy, while a piece of jewelry embellished with

diamonds will undoubtedly make her happy. Just be sure to test out your

spouse’s taste by pointing things out a month or so in advance to gauge

    their reaction.

Expert Tip: Buy them something you know they will love, not just something that you would love to see on them!

25 Year Anniversary
Congratulations on making it to 25 years! Now make each other swoon with gifts of silver.

Traditional Gift: Silver

Make It Modern: By your 25th wedding anniversary, you likely have accumulated all the silver platters and serving utensils you’ll need.

Splurge on something unique for your honey instead!

  • Clothing or Accessories for Her - Focus on silver as a color instead of a material. Silver pumps, a shimmery silver top or a pretty metallic clutch are clever picks.
  • Accessories for Him - Get your man something personalized in sterling silver, like a money clip or solid sterling martini shaker from Tiffany’s.

50 Year Anniversary
Nothing says "I love you" like gifts of gold. Of course, having been committed to each other for 50 years helps, too.

Traditional Gift: Gold

Make It Modern: When it comes to gold, tradition is a good

thing. Gold jewelry is always in style and you can buy a piece tailored

to your spouse’s personality.

  • Personalize It - Whether you get him a handsome gold

watch or her a gorgeous ring, go out of your way to personalize it. Add

a meaningful engraving that is hidden to the outside world for an

    intimate touch.
  • Golden Ticket - If there’s a place the two of you have

always wanted to visit, secretly book the trip and present your loved

one with tickets wrapped with a gold ribbon to ensure the trip of a

    lifetime.
