Design Theme: How To Pick a Theme

Before you start throwing together different decorations, take a few minutes to brainstorm a theme. Come up with a cohesive design scheme for the party's decorations that makes sense for the formality of the event as well as the guest of honor's personality......
How to Pick a Theme

1. Choose a strong color scheme. You can base it on the seasons, on the birthday boy or girl's favorite colors, or on the party's theme.

2. Choose an era that the guest of honor enjoys (1940s, 50s, 80s, or 20s, etc.) and subtly weave key elements from that decade into the décor. Unless it truly is a theme party though, be careful not to go overboard!

3. Use Décor cues from the birthday person's favorite sport, hobby, or season. It's always best to make it personal.

Furniture

If you already have beautiful furniture with ample seating room, you needn't rent more.

However, if you're hosting a large party, an outdoor party, or you just want to add an interesting element to the party, do consider renting furniture. When to Rent: Large Party - If you're hosting a large party, it's thoughtful to ensure enough seating for all the guests so they don't have to stand all night.

Outdoor Party - These parties so much fun when the weather is nice. The only drawback is the usual lack of seating. This can be remedied by renting a few modern couches with cocktail tables. The guests and birthday person alike will enjoy lounging outdoors in beautiful weather.

Flowers

Instead of buying one multi-colored floral bouquet at the grocery store, add a personal touch and plan which flowers you want to use in your Decor., ..
Floral Guidelines

1. Consider your overall design scheme first. Are you planning on sticking with a few specific colors? Carry the theme throughout the floral arrangements.

2. Order enough flowers to decorate at least four distinct spaces around the party area (i.e. dining room table, kitchen table, family room and entry way, as an example). Otherwise the flowers won't have a true impact on your décor.

3. Try purchasing your flowers online from a wholesale vendor or site like 1-800-Flowers, where you can search by color and choose your delivery date. You can save quite a bit sometimes, and will be able to order flowers your local florist may not have in her store.

Lighting: Outdoors

Lighting is a great way to set the mood for a party. When done right, it can be one of your most powerful decor elements indoors and out.

Outdoor

1. Place a few inexpensive, battery-powered uplights to place underneath trees. They will illuminate the branches just like at a resort.

2. Hang Paper lanterns overhead to create an intimate feel and a soft glow for lighting.

3. Use candles. Candles are always a must: place them in hurricanes to prevent wind from blowing them out and use them to light tables and pathways.

Lighting: Indoors

Lighting is a great way to set the mood for a party. When done right, it can be one of your most powerful decor elements indoors and out. Indoor

1. Use Candlelight. Large pillar candles in your color scheme will look lovely scattered down the center of a dining or buffet table.

2. Turn off some of your lights. Leave some of your lamps and overhead lights off for the party so your home is a tad darker than usual. It will add to an intimate ambiance for the party.
