Nothing is sadder to witness than a wandering football fan without a tailgate. Avoid being a tailgate leech and host your own kick-butt tailgate filled with the best food, beverages and games.

Once you have established a high level of tailgating standards, rotate the financial obligations of hosting the tailgate among your group of friends. Congratulations, you have now created a football season packed with tailgating perfection.

Tips

Lesson 1: Pack for a full day of football fun
This means packing plenty of food, beverages and games to last for an entire day of tailgating.

Football Food:

For your game day food, make sure to include all of the basics: burgers, hot dogs, chips with dip and sweet snacks. Pack all the meat and condiments in a large cooler so nothing spoils, and don’t forget to bring a grill to cook your meal on. Impress your friends with our recipe for an amazing four layer dip, which simply involves layering mashed black beans, a smoky chipotle salsa, cool guacamole and a layer of cream cheese. Make sure to pack two big bags of chips to satiate all the fans of this delicious dip.

For sweet snacks, bake a few batches of good old fashioned chocolate chip cookies the night before the game. If the game is around Halloween time, bring a big bowl filled with an assortment of Halloween candy for your friends to satisfy everyone's sweet tooth.

Ice Cold Beverages

A cooler filled with sodas, sports drinks and water bottles is requisite. If you're over 21, you will also need to supply plenty of alcoholic beverages to accompany the food. If your tailgating group is more than eight people, include:

  • At least one 32 pack of beer
  • Bottles of whisky, gin and vodka of your choice
  • If it’s an early game, bring champagne (3 bottles) and orange juice for mimosas

Fun & Games

First and foremost, bring a football or two to toss around before the game. A good game of touch football gets everyone revved up and in the mood to watch the game.

If possible, bring a long rectangular table (at least four feet long) to play traditional college drinking games on. Also make sure to pack a few big stacks of red plastic cups to use for Flippy Cup and Beer Pong. Follow the links to get official rules on each game.

Lesson 2: The Early Bird gets the Worm
Or, in the case of college tailgating, those who set up early get the best tailgating spots.
It might be painful to wake up bright and early after a Friday night of staying out late, but it's a tailgating necessity.

Choose your desired setup spot before game day arrives, along with an alternative spot. This will eliminate any time wasting trying to agree on a spot the day of. If your prime spot is already occupied by the time you arrive, move on to your second choice without delay.

Lesson 3: Sharing is Caring
For the first tailgate, set the standard for all future tailgating with your group of friends. This does not mean you should go over the top; it simply means that you should do things right.
Make sure there is enough food and drinks for everyone, be a gracious host, and keep people entertained with games.

After the first tailgate ends successfully, get your friends together and discuss how you can rotate hosting the tailgate for each home game. Or, pick a few key home games and decide who will host the tailgate for each must-see game. Sharing the setup and financial obligations of a fun tailgate will make them enjoyable for everyone - it relieves the constant burden from one host and gives everyone a chance to get in on the fun.
