One of my fondest memories as a kid were the family movie nights my mom had on random Friday nights. I was lucky enough to grow up across the street from my cousins, so that meant family movie night meant having them over. While we might have taken everyday playtime for granted, we always got really excited for Family Movie Night.
While it may not seem like a theme party in the same sense as this luau party might, Mom took what would normally be any old night in and made it something special with a few easy theme party ideas.
We couldn't always afford to go to the theater with such a large crowd, so Mom brought some movie magic home to us.
Most of the time, movie night happened once a month and whatever movie we watched became the basis of the theme party we enjoyed. For instance, Hocus Pocus was our annual watch during Halloween season so we always had witch's brew to drink, candy apples to munch on and witches' hats to wear.
Any other non-holiday film sometimes proved a challenge since there was time and budget to consider, but these movie night party ideas always proved a hit - no matter how often they appeared at our theme parties.
Spend some quality time with your own family and consider making movie night more than just a pizza and soda kind of evening. With a few extra dollars, a bit of planning and lots of little hands to help, you too, can enjoy a fun family movie night theme party style!
Popcorn is an essential for movie night theme parties. The smell of butter immediately makes me think of trips to the movie theater, but what really makes this movie theme party idea so great is the unique popcorn holder. Kids can help make these out of leftover wrapping paper and extra stickers lying around - consider incorporating your movie into the craft with relevant stickers/drawings. Read More
Skip the soda and opt for a sip that's sweet, but not a sugar rush waiting to happen. This creamy drink recipe is reminiscent of old fashioned drive ins. Plus, it's kid-friendly and mom approved with lots of milk, yogurt and natural flavoring. Read More
Pizza is easy and we don't know any kid who doesn't love it. Rather than calling out and ordering though, consider making some semi-homemade pizza sticks. My mom did this and you would be shocked at how excited us kids got over the individual serving size. Coryanne takes it a step further and has her kids help make the pizza itself. Read More
This is family night - so parents should have a special treat, too. After a long week it's always fun to sip a cocktail, but consider making a special one in honor of the film you're watching or wish you were watching. This Oscar-inspired recipe from the movie My Week with Marilyn is one of our favorites - as is the movie it honors! Read More
