Note to Parents

If your cake decorations include small candies; icing that is tough to eat, like fondant; or chokable items, always remove them before serving your baby or young children their cake.

Think about your personal "food rules" when deciding on your baby's first birthday cake. Some parents don't feed their children chocolate, known to be an "allergic" food, until the child is two years old.

Many party hosts opt for carrot or applesauce cake without nuts as their baby's first birthday cake.

#1 Cakes: #1 Cake Ideas

One of the easiest ways to choose a cake for your baby's first birthday is to go with the
1 theme.

You can purchase a
1-shaped cake pan and make your own or ask a bakery to make the cake and then theme the cake to your party.

Bake the cake in a 1-shaped pan and decorate it to fit your party theme.

Stack round cakes to make a 3-D 1 candle cake (pictured above).

Cut the 1 out of fondant, an edible sugar clay, and place it on a decorated cake.

Choose a thematic 1 candle along with fun cake characters as decoration.
