Create a spider web design made out of sour cream on top of guacamole

or my crowd-pleasing Triple Layer Guacamole, Egg and Cream Cheese Torte

(recipe below).

Gruesome Gourmet: Spider Web Design on a Triple Layer Guacamole, Egg and Cream Cheese Torte
Makes about appetizer 100 servings

Ingredients
  • 2(8- oz. ) packages cream cheese, softened

  • 1 cup finely chopped red onion

  • 16 eggs, hard-boiled, coarsely chopped  

  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise

  • 4 large, ripe avocados, mashed  

  • 1/2 clove garlic, minced

  • 2 teaspoons lemon juice

  • Salt & pepper  

  • 1/2 cup sour cream

  • Plastic spiders  

Steps
  • Add cream cheese and onion into a bowl and mix until blended.

  • In another bowl, mix together eggs, mayonnaise, 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon pepper until thoroughly combined. Cover and set aside.

  • In another bowl, mix together avocados, garlic and lemon juice, 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon pepper until thoroughly combined.

  • Layer ingredients into a 10-inch spring-form pan. Spread egg mixture on bottom and smooth top surface until even.

  • Spread 1/2 of the avocado mixture on top of egg and smooth top surface until even.

  • Spread cream cheese mixture on top of avocado and smooth top surface until even.

  • Spread remaining avocado mixture on top of cream cheese and smooth top surface until even.

  • Spoon sour cream into a plastic needle nose bottle or a pastry bag fitted with a no. 7 round tip and pipe a spider web design on top surface of torte. Chill until firm.

  • When ready to serve, place the torte on a serving platter. Undo the spring-form pan latch. Carefully run a knife around the edge of the torte to loosen from the pan. Gently lift off the pan's collar. Wipe the side of the serving tray if necessary. Garnish with plastic spiders and serve with crackers.

Gruesome Gourmet: Hard-Boiled Egg Eyeballs
Steps
  • Place raw eggs in a pot and add water filling to 1 inch above eggs.

  • Bring to a boil over medium-high and cook for 10-15 minutes.

  • Remove from heat and immediately run cold water in the pot.

  • Cool eggs to the touch and peel off shells.

  • Cut eggs in half, crosswise.

  • Remove yolk and mix in a bowl with a little mayo and blue food coloring.

  • Put cut egg white halves, cut side down on dish, so rounded part is on top.

  • Spread blue yolk on top of egg white to make the iris of an eye and use a sliced black olive for the pupil.



Halloween party finger food, literally. Form zesty cookie dough into creepy witch fingers and use a blanched almond for the fingernail (recipe below).

Gruesome Gourmet: Witch Finger Cookies
Makes about 48 cookies

Ingredients
  • 1 Cup butter, softened

  • 1 Cup(s) powdered sugar

  • 1 egg, lightly beaten

  • 2 Tsp lemon juice

  • 2 2/3 Cup(s) all-purpose flour

  • 1 Tsp baking soda

  • 1 Pinch of salt

  • 1 Cup whole, blanched almonds



Get smart with this Halloween party food. Fill a plastic brain mold with a pretty pink shrimp dip for the ultimate gross-out grub on Halloween (recipe below).

Gruesome Gourmet: Brain Dip

Makes about 100 appetizer servings.

Steps
  • Use 1 tablespoon of mayonnaise to grease a 6-cup brain mold or a bunch of mini brain molds; set aside.

  • Pour contents of soup can in a medium saucepan and heat over medium until warm. Stir in cream cheese until melted. Stir in dissolved gelatin with water until blended. Add remaining ingredients and mix well.

  • Remove from heat and pour into brain mold. Chill until firm. Unmold on to a platter and serve with crackers.



Hollow an orange pepper and carve a Jack-O-Lantern face in the side.

Fill with tapenade and serve with crackers as a tasty appetizer (recipe

below).

Gruesome Gourmet: Black & Green Olive Tapenade in Orange Pepper Jack-O-Lantern
Makes 2 1/2 cup.

Ingredients
  • 1/3 Cup olive oil

  • 2 (8-oz.) cans button mushrooms

  • 1 Tsp dry mustard

  • 1 Tbsp mustard seed

  • 1/2 Tsp crushed red pepper flakes

  • 1 (6-oz.) can large black olives, pitted

  • 1 Cup green olives stuffed with pimentos

  • 1/2 Tsp salt

  • 1/2 Tsp pepper

  • 3 orange bell peppers

Steps
  • Cook oil, mushrooms, dry mustard, mustard seed and red pepper flakes in a small saucepan over medium heat for 10 minutes. Remove from heat and cool to room temperature.

  • Place mushroom mixture and olives in a food processor and until olives are finely minced.

  • Cut tops of orange peppers and use a spoon to scrape out seed and inner membrane. Use a sharp knife to cut out Jack-O-Latern facial features in the side of the pepper.

  • Spoon tapenade into Jack-O-Lantern peppers and serve with thin baguette slices or crackers in a basket.



 
Tips
Close all
  • Make a Jack-O-Lantern face on frozen cheese pizza by using pepperoni slices cut into triangles for the eyes, an olive for a nose, and a green pepper sliver for the mouth.
  • Arrange face ingredients and cook pizza according to manufacturer's instructions.



Use a pumpkin-shaped cookie cutter to stamp out cookies, sandwiches, and cheese slices to melt on burgers.



Eerie and Easy: Worms in Dirt Pudding
  • Fill clear plastic cups with chocolate pudding and top with a layer of Oreo cookie crumbs for dirt.
  •  Add gummy worms coming out of the dirt.



Ice a cookie with chocolate frosting and place a Hershey's Kiss in the center to make a witch hat.
