Known for it's vibrant color, red velvet is perhaps one of the most trendy and popular batters out there, right now. While we enjoy red velvet cupcakes topped with cream cheese as much as the next person we have to admit -- we've been wanting something more from this classic dessert recipe.

What makes Krissy's recipes so great isn't that they're a feast for both your eyes and palate, they're also attainable in even the most inexperienced kitchen.
Essentially, what makes red velvet so special is that, unlike other cake batters, this one is made with buttermilk and very little cocoa. It's said that red velvet cake attains it's reddish hue thanks to the very interaction of those two ingredients, but most bakers will enhance the color of the batter with some drops of food coloring.
