Organic Thanksgiving Dinner Tips
The best part about creating an organic meal is that you won't have to change your favorite recipes! From Aunt Ida's stuffing to Grandma's mouthwatering maple pecan pie, every ingredient is available in an organic version.

If your goal is to be sustainable as well as organic, here are some tips to keep in mind:
  • Not all vegetables and fruits are in season during November. To create a sustainable Thanksgiving menu, try using only vegetables that are ripe and in season in your area. Otherwise, simply buy frozen organic vegetables that were preserved at the height of their deliciousness.
  • Support your local farmers markets by buying your Thanksgiving ingredients from nearby organic farms. Again, keep in mind that this may limit your vegetable side dish options depending on where you live. Vegetables that are abundant in Thanksgiving are root veggies, like potatoes, carrots, sweet potatoes, turnips, chesnuts and yams.

Locating all organic Thanksgiving ingredients should be fairly easy, although it may vary depending on where you live.

Where to Look:

  • The easiest place to find an abundance of organic food is at a health food store or supermarket like Whole Foods, Wild Oats, Henry's or Jimbo's (Southern California). Look up store locations on their websites to find one near you.
  • The second-best option is to visit a local farmer's market, and ask the farmers how they grow their produce or raise their animals to make sure they conform to organic standards.
  • Another convenient option is to simply go online and order the organic ingredients you need. Many small farms sell and ship their organic turkeys across the country (Check Out "Lobel's" and "Just This Farm").

5 Reasons To Go Organic
Organic food is not a gimmick, it has many health benefits.

  • Organic vegetables and fruits have a higher nutritional value (more vitamins and minerals).

  • All of the E. Coli and Salmonella outbreaks have occurred with non-organic brands of fruits and vegetables - mainly because organic companies are more careful with how the food is grown and handled.

  • If you buy local organic, you are supporting your local economy.

  • Animals used for organic meats live a much healthier lifestyle - they are fed well, treated humanely and allowed to roam.

  • Animals used for organic meats are not fed antibiotics and hormones, which result in better tasting, fresher, and higher quality meat.
