Without an endless budget, sometimes the best place to cut costs is on the bar.  Have no fear of being tacky, this is completely acceptable with a few quick tips on how to handle:

No Host Bar Restaurant or Hotel Events

Typically, guests are least surprised when asked to pay for their drinks at a restaurant or hotel event.Offer the first drink for free.
Put a complimentary punch on the bar and the server can let guests know about the set up.

No Host Bar Catered Parties

While I've never attended a catered party where the bar was not hosted, there are ways to cut beverage costs.Serve only wine and beer along with soft drinks.
Set a time limit for the bar. Start when guests arrive and continue for the next 2 hours. Again, let guests know that this is the plan!
