Celebrate This: National Waffle Day

The mere sound of Waffle Day is smile inducing, like something your parents thought up as a reward for good grades and a tidy bedroom. In actuality Waffle Day commemorates the patenting of the waffle iron in 1869 by Cornelius Swarthout. While the holiday pays homage to the man who made waffles as we’ve come to know them—a sweet and syrupy breakfast food, the origins of the waffle can be traced all the way back to fourteenth century Greece where two flat cakes were cooked between two metal pans and topped with various cheeses and herbs.  Whether you like them sweet and sticky or traditional and savory, enjoy a stack of waffles today with some help from our bloggers.
