Celebrate This: National Oatmeal Muffin Day

It's tough playing second banana to cupcake, which is why it's high time we celebrate the muffin, and all it's down for us as cupcake's often healthier and always under appreciated cousin. Today we celebrate a particular kind of muffin, the oatmeal muffin, a healthier and, in my opinion, tastier alternative to all that sugary nonsense kids cram in their mouths at breakfast time. Don't believe me? Take a look at these mega muffins our favorite bloggers have whipped up, and see for yourself!

I love granola as much as the next gal, but sometimes when I'm snacking on the dry stuff I just want something a little more, I don't know, rich, dense, wowing—pick one! Science of Mom delivers the goods and then some with this kid-taming, blues-busting recipe for Baked Oatmeal Muffins. Chunky, wholesome oats may steal the show, but banana, apple and molasses are the key players in this chewy muffin recipe. Perfect for an on-the-go breakfast or a quick after-school snack, these oatmeal muffins are a great way to start or end the day.

Oatmeal gets a chocolatey makeover in this divinely decadent recipe from Cookie Madness. Just when you thought this post was taking a turn for the healthy this recipe for Dark Chocolate Oatmeal Muffins swoops in with it's bittersweet baditude and impresses us all. Don't get me wrong, this recipe's secret ingredient is pureed prunes, something that may either tempt or deter you from trying these mini morsels, but prune or no prune these muffins rate high on the chocolatey scale.

Since this holiday season began I've been craving almonds in every way , shape or form, perhaps it has something to do with the copious amounts of marzipan found on every shelf and website, or maybe I've truly gone nuts! Anyway, when I stumbled upon this next recipe from Home Cooking with Sonya, I was delighted to see she topped off her already fabulous Brown Sugar Oat Muffins with slivers of almonds to give the sweet treats an extra bit of crunch. How pretty are they? I think I might whip up a batch on Christmas morning!

I love to mix things up—add a spice or two where they don't usual venture to go, or substitute this for that to add unexpected taste to a traditional or mundane recipe, however there something to be said about the original, that is, those staple foods that are consistently delicious on their own without any surprises or changes to the recipe. This recipe from Something Creative Daily is a sterling example of how keeping things simple and unadulterated is often the best route. These Perfect Oatmeal Muffins are gimmick-free, bells-and-whistles-free gems, which is why it's no surprise that there are no surprises when it comes to just how good they are.
