Cinco de Mayo!

After the excitement of the Kentucky Derby this past weekend, did Cinco de Mayo slip your mind? Here are 5 last minute ideas for an impromptu fiesta!

Cinco de Mayo
1. Salsa Bar

Set up a salsa bar for dinner to top nachos or quesadiilas. Choose a variety of salsas in a jar, such as Newman's Pineapple Salsa, a green salsa verde, and salsa fresca from the refrigerated section of the grocery store.

2. Mexican Music

Download Mexican or Latin music to blast fiesta tunes throughout your home.

3. Pinata

Pick up a pinata and some treats from the party store and "have at it" when the kids return home from school.

4. Mexican Cut-Out Placemats

Although Mexican cut-out placemats are typically rectangular, they remind me of cut-out snowflakes that kids make in school for Christmas decorations. Here's how to make them:

  1. Simply fold construction paper in half, and then keep on folding until you have about a 4-inch square.
  2. Cut off the corners of the square and make creative cuts in the sides of the square.
  3. Unfold the paper to reveal your placemat.

5. Cinco de Mayo Centerpiece Ideas

  • Mini cactus in the center of the table
  • Small terra cotta pots, each filled with fresh red, green, and yellow chile peppers
  • A Mexican blanket overlay on the tablecloth and bright-colored pillar candles on top as a table display.
