The next time you're cooking up a romantic meal or looking to stir the, ahem, heart strings of your honey out at dinner, look for recipes or dishes that feature these ingredients in a big way.

What makes a food an aphrodisiac?

Aphrodisiacs date back to ancient times, when reproduction was important for both moral and religious reasons. They were sought after those looking to increase libido and fertility, and they were thought to reduce fear of sexual inadequacy.

In addition to these biological factors, it was believed that aphrodisiacs derived from the Greek love goddess, Aphrodite, and the values she was said to have held in nature.
