Apple Inspiration for a Rosh Hashanah Celebration at Home

Rosh Hashanah is the Jewish New Year and, like most Jewish holidays, food plays a big role in the celebration. Apples and honey are particularly important symbols of the holiday as apple slices are traditionally dipped into honey to express hope for a sweet new year.

Apples are also symbolic of good health in Jewish culture and are eaten on Rosh Hashanah after a special blessing is offered to thank God for keeping the family healthy and bringing them into the new season. The act of eating apples is meant to remind Jews of the fruits of the Earth and how wonderful it is to be alive and thankful that they can enjoy all these blessings.

Because this seasonal fruit plays such an intrinsic part in the Rosh Hashanah celebrations, we rounded up some of the sweetest apple recipes, crafts and decorations. Use these ideas to inspire your Rosh Hashanah meal and celebration at home!

  • Like Brenda says, kids love cupcakes - but so do we! And while we'd eat these scrumptuous looking honey apple cupcakes any day of the year, they're so perfect for Rosh Hashanah. Between the apple-honey combo and the festive toppers, they're a holiday treat guests of all ages will appreciate.

  • Apples aren't just for baking. Consider using one or two in your Rosh Hashanah decor by transforming them into a crafty stamp. Follow our apple stamp tutorial and use them to decorate linen napkins, your tablecloth or paper banners.

  • A more grown-up dessert, this elegant applesauce cake with pomegranate glaze is an unexpected treat. The complexity of the flavors and gorgeous look of the cake make this a must have at your Rosh Hashanah celebrations.

  • This Rosh Hashanah sangria recipe is full of holiday flavors and makes for the perfect drink to toast the new year. Tori suggests mixing up a batch of her sangria and discussing the culinary symbolism it embodies with your holiday guests.

  • Patti crafted these apple cards for a back to school project, but we love the idea of having the kids do the same for Rosh Hashanah. Instead of writing a note to teacher though, have the children write what they're most grateful for this past year as well as their greatest wish for the upcoming new year.

  • Get creative with apples and use them in your centerpieces. We love the hue of green apples paired with deep berry or purple colors for Rosh Hashanah. Both seasonal and elegant, they're simple enough to make and will make a wonderful display at your holiday table.

  • Challah is a traditional recipe served at every Jewish celebration, including Rosh Hashanah. Give this holiday's challah a special twist and bake with apples. It's an easy recipe, but one that will add a tasty twist to your Rosh Hashanah celebration.

  • Another stamp craft, this adorable project from the Creative Jewish Mom will find a festive use for those wine corks you've got on hand. Etch an apple design on the bottom of your cork with an Xacto knife, then decorate Rosh Hashanah cards to give to friends and family to wish them a happy new year.
