Blending Tex-Mex and Tradition: Cinco de Mayo Recipes

Food is pretty essential to any holiday, but in my house this is extra important when it comes to Cinco de Mayo.

After visiting Mexico and enjoying some of the local restaurants, my husband and I have developed quite the taste for Mexican food. While we always enjoy those more traditional recipes, we're also fan of the Tex-Mex style, too.

This year, blend these two cuisines and create a Cinco de Mayo menu that will please the crowd of friends gathering at your place. Tacos and margaritas are classic Cinco de Mayo recipes, but expand your palate with some of these delicious ideas!

  • Sweet and spicy appetizers set the scene for our Cinco de Mayo party. Sliced mangos marinated in a lime chili powder pack tons of flavor in a small bite. They're a perfect appetizer to get the fiesta started.

  • Are you a big fan of spinach artichoke dip? Turn it into a Cinco de Mayo appetizer (or vegetarian entree!) like we did here. We've also got a classic cheese quesadilla that works well with sliced steak or chicken!

  • Make some margarita Jell-O shots ahead of the party for guests to enjoy while you mix up the perfect margarita...keep clicking for the recipe!

  • Mini chicken tacos are a classic Mexican street food that's easy to recreate for a crowd at home.

  • We've had guacamole that's sweet, citrusy, full of spice, chunky, creamy...suffice to say we've eaten a lot of guacamole, so we know a good recipe when we see one. This guacamole is easy and tasty, which means it's perfect for a party.

  • Make sure the best margarita recipe earns a spot on your Cinco de Mayo menu. OK, we're making a big claim here, but we're convinced our recipe IS best.

  • Pico de gallo is a traditional Mexican recipe that's great for two reasons: it's unbelieveable flavor and it's versatility. Keep it simple and let guests dip, serve it tapas style on some toasted crostini or use it as a topping for tacos.

  • Prefer to sip your mango instead of munching on it? We understand, which is why this mango-rita recipe is a bit of fun and a whole lot of flavor to add to your Cinco de Mayo menu.

  • If you need a great big entree to make ahead of time stick with this Cinco de Mayo recipe. It combines all that's great about enchiladas and casseroles into one delicious dish everyone will enjoy.

  • Moving onto dessert - keep it classic with homemade churros. No one can say no to fried dough sprinkled with sugar...especially if they've been indulging in margaritas all evening!

  • Or, if the weather's really warm, try making these one-of-a-kind hibiscus flower popsicles. They're as tasty as they are pretty.

  • If you're really working the margarita angle, this margarita cake recipe is a favorite of ours and lots of readers. We've already made it twice - once with a pretzel base and another time with graham crackers. Either way a delicious Cinco de Mayo menu addition!
