Checklist: Romantic Fall Picnic for Two

Plan a romantic picnic for two outdoors with your loved one to enjoy the gorgeous changing seasons! Take a look at our checklist for all of the essentials for your autumn picnic.

As much as I love the wine lists and complimentary bread baskets that restaurants have to offer, there’s no better way to enjoy the company of your loved one than with an intimate, romantic picnic for two. Something about eating outside and enjoying the scenery makes your meal even more delicious.

Even though picnics are typically reserved for the summer, I think the best time to enjoy eating outdoors is in the fall. Setting up an intimate date outside among the changing leaves and crisp fall air is a romantic way to enjoy the tastes, smells and sounds of the season.

Use our checklist of fall picnic necessities, and get inspired to plan your best date yet.

  • Scenic Location

Not all of us live near Central Park or Lake Tahoe, but it's not hard to find a gorgeous nearby location if you keep an eye out. Scope out the perfect spot ahead of time (and make sure it's not private property, of course). It could be a park, a nearby forest or even your own backyard. And a picnic table may be a necessity if you're planning on packing a huge spread.

  • Blanket & Throws

You’ll need something cozy and comfy to sit on while you’re noshing, so bring an oversized quilt or blanket that can withstand the grass. Throw in some seat cushions and additional blankets -- we love Tartan blankets for fall -- to add some extra comfort and pizzazz.

  • Picnic Basket

This seems like a no-brainer, but a picnic is not complete without the right basket. Find one that’s big enough to hold all of your supplies, but won’t be too heavy to carry to your destination. Browse your local thrift stores and flea markets for an inexpensive and vintage piece. Also, think about how to repurpose the basket after your picnic -- can you use it as fall decor when you're not picnicking?

  • Plates, Bowls & Cutlery

If your picnic basket doesn't come with the necessary dishes and utensils, don't forget to include as many plates and bowls as you need for your meal. As much as we love the aesthetics of porcelein dishes, packing lightweight paper plates, bowls, napkins and utensils make for easier transportation and cleanup. Find sturdy and inexpensive varieties at your local Walmart, Target or party supply store.

  • Delicious Autumn Dishes

To fully embrace the season, pack some fall favorite comfort food. Our recipe Easy Pumpkin Curry Soup can be stored in a large Thermos and easily carried. We love the idea of mini foods for minimal mess and cleanup, so bake our Mini Apple Pies for dessert.

  • Fall Decor

Add some autumn romance to your setup with some fresh fall flowers and colorful gords. Use Mason Jars or small wicker baskets for vases. For a more romantic ambiance, bring some flameless candles to really set the mood.

  • Cocktails For Two

Wine or chilled champagne always screams date night, but you can also spice up your drink options with some tasty fall cocktails. Try our Caramel Apple Cocktail, or Brandy Wine for a seasonal sipper. Mix beforehand in large Mason Jars for easy transportation.

  • Citronella Candles

Make sure you can enjoy your meal instead of becoming the meal. Although bugs aren't as fiesty in the fall as they are in the summer, keep the creepy crawlies away with unscented OFF, which doesn't carry as strong of a scent as regular bug spray. If you have a sturdy surface to place candles, then bring citronella candles for added protection. We love these DIY Citronella Candles from Free People's blog Bldg 25.
