Creative Details for a Same Sex Wedding

With marriage equality taking force , same-sex couples throughout the nation can finally make their life partnership legally official and celebrate with all the fixins of a traditional matrimony. While some states are still on the fence about this issue, we’ve gathered up some of our favorite creative details for a gay wedding in hopes that one day all of our friends, family, and neighbors can celebrate their love with no “ifs, ands or buts”.

Whether you want to decorate for your lgbt wedding using traditional wedding themes or wish to mark the occasion with an ode to the struggle of same-sex recognition, we’ve rounded up eight of our favorite details for a same-sex marriage.

  • Celebrate Equality

Kevin and Pete celebrated their big day by representing the fight for equality in this real wedding featured on Equally Wed. They served Limoncello in mason jars dressed up with the Human Rights Equality symbol; those same jars were later filled with candles and sent home as party favors. I love the idea of reusing and repurposing items for a creative way to cut costs; check out some more of our favorite ideas using mason jars.

  • Serveware Sayings

Custom serve ware like these etched “hers & hers” forks from Impressed By a Dame are a simple yet elegant addition to the happy couple’s table setting. Get the how-to for creating your own personalized silverware here.

  • Personalized Party Favors

Custom favor bags like these from Etsy are the medium for your memorable event. You can purchase pre-made ones, or personalize and create your own with our how-to for creating your own stamped burlap bags here.

  • Colorful Chuppa

It’s no secret that the rainbow has long been a symbolic in the gay community. This rainbow chuppa featured by Equally Wed is a creative way to incorporate this colorful icon into your decor.
  • Colored Cubes

You can even dress up your drinks with easy-to-make rainbow ice cubes! Be mindful of the liquid you use to make them, so as to avoid interfering with the flavor of the served drinks.

  • A Sweet Topper

Top your wedding cake off with a sweet cake topper that reflects the happy couple. You can purchase a premade set or order custom, or simply create your own with this DIY kit from Etsy.

  • Creative Couples Chairs

Make the special couple's seating area even more festive by decorating them with DIY bows! We used burlap to fit our Burlap and Lace Engagement party, but you can easily customize this idea to fit your theme.
  • Release a Rainbow into the Sky

Gather guests for a final send off by releasing hundreds of sky lanterns (representing all colors of the rainbow) into the sky! Your joyous affair will be marked by a celebration that’s truly out of this world. While this rainbow may not have a pot of gold on the other end, the future that awaits happy couple is a treasure in itself.
