Sexy & Smoky Whiskey Cocktails for Valentine's Day

If you and your man are like most couples, you have very different ideas about what constitutes the perfect cocktail. (And if you both love to drink the same thing all the time, then congratulations: ordering your drinks together at a bar must be a breeze).

For the rest of us, finding a drink we can agree on is a little tricky. Luckily, whisky is one of those peacemaking liquors that helps couples meet halfway. It's a bold and smoky enough flavor on its own, but tastes just as good when mixed with other cocktail ingredients. While some people prefer to sip their whisky on the rocks or diluted with water, a good whisky cocktail (made properly) is hard to beat.

This Valentine's Day, instead of splitting another boring bottle of wine or mixing up two different cocktails all evening, try one of these whisky-based beverages you both will enjoy. Surprise him with a fresh drink for your romantic night in, or before you head out on your big date.

  • Vanilla Bean Whiskey Cocktail

Vanilla-infused whiskey, raw vanilla and bitters make up this strong, yet flavorful cocktail from A Beautiful Life. It's strong enough for him, but tasty enough for you.

  • Champagne Etoile

It's always nice to toast with champagne while celebrating your relationship, but this drink from Coco + Kelley takes it up a notch by adding bourbon, vanilla and lemon.

  • Honey of a Whiskey Sour

This sweet drink from Bake at 350 is inspired by P.F. Chang's Twisted Whiskey Sour. The drink combines honey simple syrup, orange juice, Cointreau and lemon juice for a sweeter drink. Scale back the juice for a more stiff concoction.

  • Enc(rust)ed Nail

A twist on the Rusty Nail, this cocktail uses white label scotch, Maraschino liqueur, bitters and lemon for a sweet and smoky cocktail. Get the recipe from Liquor.com.

  • Scarlet Starlet

For a really impressive and mixologist-level cocktail, get fancy with this Scarlet Starlet, featured on Saveur. Ingredients include hibiscus syrup, strawberry syrup, vanilla Cognac liqueur and fresh lime juice.

  • Red Hot Cinnamon Cocktail

This spicy, yet simple concoction features the strong cinnamony Fireball whiskey and ginger ale. Add some grenadine and top with cinnamon candy (such as Hot Tamales) for a drink that's as hot as your night together. Get the recipe from Better Recipes.

  • Rob Roy

The classic Rob Roy is a little twist on the Manhattan, with lemon juice, vermouth, and bitters. It's a strong, yet flavorful drink you both will love. Get the recipe on Food Republic.
