5 Tips to Keep Your Yard Party Ready

As the weather warms up, everybody thinks about heading outside. This is especially true when it comes to parties where you can enjoy good times under the sun or stars.

Outdoor entertaining is one of the best parts of summertime. But, after months of cold snaps and lackluster landscaping, your yard may not be up to par for stylish entertaining.

Our five tips will help change that and get your yard ready for a party anytime this season.

Unique Landscaping Features

If you are the type of person to host summer parties on the fly, it helps to have a house and yard that is easy to find.

Make your home stand out with exotic flowers, personal touches in the garden or a surprise element in the yard.

You can simply tell guests to look for the house with the:

flower beds lined with small American flags.

birds of paradise surrounding the mailbox and fence posts.

stone water feature by the sidewalk.

metal sculpture sitting in the side yard.

or the seasonal garlands strung across the front porch.

These are all decorative ideas that will keep your yard ready all summer long, so don't bother with the balloons that will deflate the next day!

Outdoor Entertaining Space

Even a tiny yard can fit in a place to sit and some special decorative touches!

To have a party ready yard anytime, you need a designated space for outdoor entertaining.

Find a level spot defined by decking, pavers or an outdoor rug.

Choose furniture based on space limitations and entertaining needs. Some yards may only hold a small table and chairs, but larger ones can accommodate additional lounge areas.

Create shade if needed with a pergola, patio umbrella or plantings.

If you don't have any natural greenery in your yard (think grass and trees!) try placing potted plants in corners or in other non-seating areas. It will add a splash of color and really make your outdoor dining experience more enjoyable.

A Clutter Free Yard

If your yard is littered with lawn mowers, garden hoses and kid's toys, it won't be a very inviting place for guests.

Commit to picking up after every outdoor project, and convince your kids to do the same after playing outside.

Designate specific areas of a garage or storage shed for gardening supplies and toys so everyone can easily put away the things they use.

If your yard tends to attract clutter, always pick something up when headed indoors whether after a day at work or a quick walk to the mailbox.

Well Groomed Flowers and Shrubs

Planting and maintaining flowerbeds and shrubs keeps your yard guest-ready. Colorful flowers, interesting plant arrangements and enticing scents create a welcome landscape for anytime you host a gathering of family and friends.

Trim shrubs, weed beds and plant flowers at the beginning of the season. Plan a few days throughout the summer for additional upkeep.

Create interest in flowerbeds and pots with varying heights, colors and scents of flowers. Long-blooming perennials such as hydrangeas, daylilies and coneflowers provide interest and last throughout most of the season.

Water the flowers daily (unless your area enjoys regular rainfall) to prevent wilting.

Regular Lawn Maintenance

Having a freshly mowed lawn for every party - especially impromptu ones - may be impossible. However, sticking with a regular maintenance routine ensure there is never a major problem with overgrown grass or out-of-control weeds.

Cut grass at least once a week to prevent overgrowth.

Use sprinklers to water grass for about an hour daily to keep the lawn green. Check city ordinances to determine when watering is allowed.

Consider a monthly pest control service to avoid bug problems at party time.
