7 Tips for a Successful First Date

When it comes to dating, we like to use the Boy Scout motto: Be prepared! First dates can be amazing and equally terrifying so don't let yourself trip up!

We have pulled together some killer first date tips that will send you on your next first date feeling as cool as Jennifer Lawrence and as confident as Ryan Gosling (hubba hubba).

Tips for a First Date

1. Know your date

Common sense, right? Well not so much. Whether you met at a bar or online, it's good to do a little research before hand. You don't need to find out the blood type of your date (read: potential husband), but having a general sense of who he is (mutual friends, etc) will help put you at ease. Just make sure you watch what you saying during the date. There is nothing creepier than knowing too much about another person before they tell you.

2. Look up the restaurant or bar

My best friend and I discovered this little trick that helps to put our nerves at ease. If you are an indecisive person or get particularly nervous on dates, go ahead and look up the menu ahead of time. This way you will know what you are getting into. Especially if you have food allergies and don't want to have to ask the waiter or waitress a million questions. Guys love girls who know what they want. So sit down and order with confidence.

3. Pick out your outfit

Duh, right? Well how many times do you find yourself tearing through your closet screaming "I have nothing to wear!" Plan your outfit ahead of time. And we mean way ahead of time. Date is on Friday? Try picking your outfit out on Wednesday. This gives you some ample time to mull over your decision. Once you have that perfect 'sexy but sweet' killer outfit, stick with it. Last minute changes only adds to you being stressed. If all else fails, go with the LBD (little black dress) and your most comfortable pair of heels.

4. Be early

Get to the bar or restaurant early. This might be a personal preference but I like arriving early when going on a date. This gives you a chance to scope out the place and get settled. It also takes off the pressure of having to search for your date in a sea of people. We also suggest settling your nerves with a glass of wine. This will help calm you and also give you something to do while waiting at the bar.

5. Don't Talk about your Ex.

Come on. Zip it. No need to talk about your most recent breakup or that horrible crazy ex. This date is a chance to start new so bite your tongue woman!

6. Don't Drink Too Much.

We have all been there. You are nervous so you drink. A lot. No need to have that 4th margarita. Pace yourself by interchanging your drinks with nice tall glasses of water. You will thank yourself the next morning.

7. Enjoy!

A friend once said "the first date usually goes great best because both parties want it to." This is true. There is a reason why you're on this hot date so just enjoy it! Also. Be yourself. Well, you don't need to scroll through the entire picture album of your cat but feel free to share one or two pics. After all, you won't want to find out 7 dates in that your new love is deathly allergic to cats and have to kick him to the curb! The man of course - not your cat.
