A Pop Country Birthday Party for Tweens

With sassy, trendy, music stars like the Carrie Underwood, Taylor Swift, and now even Jessica Simpson, it’s no surprise that Pop Country has become a fast favorite among young girls and tweens.

The new sound of country, a blending of traditional violins, fiddles and gentle twang with faster, upbeat composition, sure ain’t your grandma’s country.

With such popularity among the tween circuit, why not consider hosting a Pop Country Rock Star themed birthday party? We did just that, when my nine-year-old, too sophisticated for "kiddie" parties, asked to create a celebration for her special day.

Tips to Plan a Pop Country Theme Party for Tweens :

Set the theme with the invitation - We created our own personalized invitations, including a fab picture of her rock star of choice, Taylor Swift, on the masthead.

In addition to the date and time of the fête, we asked that girls arrive in their favorite Pop Country singer attire: cowgirl boots (or Uggs-style boots) and hats, skinny jeans and anything sparkly.

Decorate - In keeping with the theme, we found party supplies adorned with guitars and music notes. For an authentic flair, we found some hay bales for kids to sit on during the outdoor portion of the party.

If your hometown does not include a local feed store, you can visit your local craft store and purchase smaller, man-made hay bales for decoration at the party. These smaller versions make great center pieces! Try adorning one of two with seasonal foliage, or other party-themed items such as a music notes or a cowgirl boot.

Plan the Activities - There’s nothing worse than a group of tweens left to their own silly, giddy, high-pitched devices. Keep the party moving with some fun activities.

Get Crafty! - While at the local craft store, you may want to pick up some party-themed crafts for the girls to enjoy. Guests can create their own rock star concert t-shirts (don’t forget to include all the concert dates and locations of their fantasy tour on the back). Be sure to include some glitter, too. Rock stars (and tweens) love all that sparkles.

Tune Up Those Vocal Chords - For our party, we borrowed a karaoke machine.  Girls, dressed in their Pop Country best, belted out their favorite tunes and pretended to be on their own stage, performing in front of millions of adoring fans. It’s every girl’s dream and a great way to keep with the theme of the party.

Get Them Moving - Once the post-pizza insulin surge sets in, it’s time to get those giddy girls on the move. To do this, we held an outdoor scavenger hunt.

Prior to our guests’ arrival, we secured laminated party-themed pictures (again, the cowgirl hats and boots, music notes, and of course, photos of Taylor Swift) to outdoor objects such as trees, downspouts, benches, and large rocks. Once all the girls were outside, we set them on a race to find all the pictures. Guests with the most pictures each received a prize.

An Update on the Cake - Cupcakes have been quite the rage lately. So rather than the traditional square cake, my daughter opted for cupcakes, presented on a tiered cupcake stand.

Of course, you can embellish with a little bling. A fake gemmed ring nestled atop each cupcake will have all the girls squealing with delight (and fantasizing that Justin Beiber left it there for them).

Parting Gifts - In addition to the obligatory goodie bag (which we stuffed with tween delights such as lip gloss, head bands, hair clips and nail polish) each guest left with a special treat; a homemade chocolate guitar lollipop. Chocolate molds can now be found in a wide variety of shapes, themes and characters.  Check your local bakeware supplier or online for unique chocolate mold options.

Don’t forget to say thanks! - Pictures of guests rocking the house at the party can take the place of a traditional store-bought thank-you card. Your own little rock star can write her words of gratitude on the back and of course, add her autograph. Rock on!
