An Extra Sweet Cake Pop Class

If you'd ask my friends describe me, "baker" would most likely be the last word that would come into their minds. My idea of baking from scratch is buying a box of Duncan Hines and adding my own milk and eggs.

Which is why, when my younger brother came to visit, the last thing he expected to bond with me over was a cake pop class.

Not that both of us are afraid of the kitchen – my brother has been baking homemade bread for the past few years which he proudly uses to fatten up the family. I thought cake pops would be a fun dessert to learn and I was hoping that by learning one cute dessert idea, I could fool any future guests into thinking I was a master baker and host. It also happened to be the first time he was visiting since my move, so what better way to celebrate than by catching up over eating frosting and rolling cake pops!

Lucky for me, there happens to be an adorable bakery just one block away from my apartment that hosts weekly classes. What a hit! Not only did we go home with over a dozen tasty red velvet cake pops, but also had a great time hurling frosting and chocolate candies at each other.

The most exciting part was of course the decorating! The cake pop instructor had set up a decorating station filled with different flavors of frosting as well as a bunch of sprinkles in various colors and textures and some cute chocolate candies to experiment with!

I now know why cake pops have become the newest “must-have” at any party! They are so cute and easily customizable, and you can even make a fun activity out of it.

Here’s a great “how-to” for creating a fun cake pop making and decorating station, inspired by my newly found baking skills from the cake pop class!

  • Pre-made cakes (homemade or store bought) in various flavors
  • Variety of frostings – vanilla, chocolate, and cream cheese are popular picks
  • Cake pop sticks
  • Chocolate morsels
  • Gel food coloring
  • Different kinds of sprinkles and candies

Have your little bakers choose their cake of choice. Crumble up in bowl until cake is in fine pieces.

Using an ice cream scooper, throw in a scoop of your favorite flavor frosting.

Mush together until you reach play dough-like texture.

Roll them into balls about 1 inch thick. If using a mold (like the cupcake mold we used), be sure to mold them after rolling them into a ball!

Let cool in fridge for 10 minutes.

Melt chocolate morsels in microwave until soft and melted.

Dip cake pop sticks about 1/4” into chocolate mixture for “glue”.

Warm frosting up until melted, and dip cake pops into frosting.

Let excess frosting drip.

Cover with sprinkles or candy.

Once finished with the batch, let cool in fridge.
