Argh! Celebrate International Talk Like a Pirate Day

Ahoy, me hearties! Did ye ever have the urge to talk like a swashbuckling pirate?

Well ye dreams have come true because September 19th is International Talk Like a Pirate Day. And unlike some other holidays that have sprung up in recent years (National Write Your Epitaph Day), TLPD is a day filled with fun and witty pirate speak.

It’s the perfect opportunity to call a pesky co-worker a scurvy dog without fear of repercussion. And a good old parley with the boss might just land you some more loot (just choose ye words wisely, lest you become shark bait, matey). And wouldn’t you love to end a long day of work with some carousing and spirits, all in the name of good pirating? Well, shiver me timbers! September 19th is just the day for such debauchery.

Once you’ve gotten ye sea legs, step to and prepare for some pirate festivities. Begin by handing out invitations to a pirate party . Instead of traditional invites, consider creating a pirate map.  Include the party date and time, but also map out the directions, including a big “X” marks the spot for the party location. Using a tea stained parchment and rolling it up like a scroll will add authenticity and fun. And don’t forget to ask guests to arrive in full pirate gear. What’s a pirate party without traditional garb?

As for decorations, keep with the theme and hang some Jolly Roger Flags. And what’s a pirate without his treasure chest? Disguise an oversized cooler by covering it with felt. Paint on some brass latches and a lock. You might even embellish the chest with fake jewels or a skull and cross bones. Fill the chest with ice and cold drinks for all ye lasses and lads.

What’s a party without food? Keep it sea worthy and serve seafood fare such as fish and chips, shrimp or lobster salad. Don’t forget that pirates also dined on hard tack (dry biscuits will suffice), salted meat, sweet breads and pirate’s stew (you can get creative with that one). Also, you might consider concocting a signature drink for the party, such as a Bloody Hell, Pirate’s Kiss or a Red Beard's Punch .

For some party fun, have guests devise pirate names for one another. Before long, your party will boast of scoundrels such as Captain Scurvy, Barnacle Bob, Anchor’s Away Allie, Scallywag Sam, and Cannonball Jack.

Hand out some hooks for hands and tell those hornswaggling lads to walk the plank for their mutinous acts. A long plank of wood from the local hardware store will work just fine as a prop. And speaking of props, how about a crow’s nest? A large plastic garbage barrel with an entry cut out will serve the purpose. Fasten some fishing nets and sea shells for decoration and be sure to fix a Jolly Roger Flag on a mast which you secure to the top of the barrel. How’s that for a great photo op at your party?

And don’t forget pirate’s booty. The guest with the best costume could win a good ole bottle o’ rum, a tasty batch of cannon ball cupcakes or a pair of binoculars for spotting enemy pirate ships. Before each guest departs for the seven seas, hand them some gold foil-wrapped chocolate for luck on their voyage.

So come on ye wenches and scallywags. Put on an eye patch and a fancy pirate hat. Channel your inner Captain Jack Sparrow. It might just keep you from taking a trip down to Davy Jones’ Locker because dead men tell no tales. Savvy?
