Au Natural Christmas Centerpiece

Natural fiber Christmas trees take center stage on the table to create a casual but interesting centerpiece for the holidays.

I wrapped Styrofoam cones with yarn, burlap and ribbon and then clustered them all together on the table for a Christmas Centerpiece that's a bit more vintage. This technique is a versatile one and can be used in many ways. The trick is to combine similar fabric shades, but assorted textures to give your centerpiece a layered look.

Finally, elevating the trees at different levels makes a more interesting arrangement. I placed the trees amidst some dry grass, dropped some miniature pine cones into the mix and centered a little angel in the middle of the trees. It's subdued, but festive!

Supplies
  • 9 1/2 inch Styrofoam cones (we used 3 cones)
  • thick yarn, like twine, burlap ribbon, nylon ribbon
  • pins
  • scissors
Directions

Beginning at the base of the cone, stick a pin through the ribbon or yarn -- into the Styrofoam cone and begin to wrap, a layer at a time, until you reach the top.

You can occasionally stick a pin through the layers as you work your way to the top to securely hold the yarn or ribbon in place. Bring the ribbon all the way to the top and pin in place.

Note: Yarn or twine will wrap easily, one layer above the other, to the top. The ribbon, because it is wider, will be overlapped, pressing each layer together. There will be a few wrinkles, but it gives it an interesting texture, so it's okay.

I poked the tip of a wooden star into the top of the burlap tree.

A little golden pear ornament is hung from the ribbon tree. I clipped a bird to the top of this tree and placed it on a white candle stand.

The tree wrapped in yarn was placed in a weathered terra cotta pot. A length of baker's twine was attached to the top with 2 little black stars hanging from the ends.
