Best Patriotic Desserts for Your July 4th Barbecue

Flag cake? Sure, everyone wants this standby for a July 4th cookout, but a party certainly doesn’t need more than one. Red, white and blue can be worked into other fun recipes, and ones that are far less likely to be duplicates a berry and whipped cream flag. These six patriotic desserts will set off their own fireworks.

Summer Trifle

A trifle is an elegant twist on the flag cake, and even easier to assemble. Made without buttery frosting, this summer dessert tastes lighter—and that’s a welcome feeling after a spread of hot dogs and potato salad. To make it, layer pound cake, whipped cream, strawberries and blueberries in a large glass bowl. Want to be healthier? Swap the cream for plain or vanilla yogurt.

Patriotic Apples

No time to bake a dessert? No problem: Just order these Patriotic Caramel Apples from 1-800-baskets! With red, white and blue stars adorning the creamy caramel and tart Granny Smith apples, this fruit is dressed for the occasion.

Star Cookies

Those Christmas cookie cutters are pretty dusty in your pantry, so haul them out for a moment in the sun. Stamping stars from a simple sugar cookie recipe is as easy as 1-2-3. And you can let the kids to go town decorating with white icing and red and blue sprinkles, along with a few silver dragees for a luxe touch.

Stars and Stripes Strawberries

We love chocolate covered strawberries in the summer, especially the festive Stars and Stripes Strawberries from 1-800-baskets. Just make sure to store them in a cool place until it’s time for dessert: these strawberries are best served slightly chilled.

Not every dessert needs to be a sugary one. A simple array of flag-colored fruits is often just the right ending to a big summer meal. For this idea, arrange piles of raspberries next to a line of sliced bananas and then finish with a stripe of blueberries. Offer raspberry sorbet on side and you’re done (so easy!). And if your July barbecue includes a night’s stay with a friend, the Americana Cookie Jar from 1-800-baskets is the perfect hostess gift!

Star-shaped cereal treats

You can transform Rice Krispies or fruit-flavored O’s into the sweetest summer dessert. Make your favorite marshmallow treat recipe, subbing in a fruity or red-tinted cereal, or simply add a few drops of red food coloring to the bowl. Use a star shape to cut the treats and then frost with icing that’s colored blue or use white frosting topped with blue sprinkles. Delish!
