DIY Doormat Halloween Decoration Craft

A little time and paint is all you need to jazz up an old doormat for Halloween.

I was recently searching for Halloween doormats when inspiration hit. I’ll paint my own! I had a plain, boring doormat sitting in front of my door that was in need of a crafty makeover.

I wasn’t sure of the outcome, but the doormat looks store-bought and it was surprisingly easy to accomplish. I used my nifty multipurpose heat tool to cut out my stencils, but don’t fret if you don’t have one. An X-acto knife will work just as well.

I recommend heavily pressing the adhesive stencils down to the mat before painting, so there aren’t any gaps for the paint to seep through. Take your time and paint inwards to get clean, crisp lines. The mat will really absorb the paint and you will probably use the entire bottle and possibly a second.

I’m off to paint more doormats, now that I know how easy it is to do!

  • Plain Doormat
  • Adhesive Stencil Film
  • Multipurpose Heat Tool or X-acto Knife
  • Black DecoArt Americana Acrylic Paint
  • Stencil Brush

Step 1: Print out BOO letters (I used Rockwell Extra Bold font at 600). Place adhesive stencil paper on top of each letter and cut around the letter, using an X-acto knife or multipurpose heat tool to create a stencil.

Step 2: Peal adhesive backing off of the stencils and adhere to the doormat. You might have to do one letter at a time and allow drying time in between if they overlap. Use a stencil brush to add 2-3 coats of paint. Allow to dry before peeling off stencils.

Step 3: Place in front of your door before trick-or-treaters arrive.
