Why We're Celebrating International Day of Happiness (and You Should, Too)

At Celebrations, we're all about making the most of every day. Some days are wonderful, and some are not so much. But everyone deserves a chance to be happy, especially for one whole day.

The United Nations General Assembly has deemed March 20 International Day of Happiness. A day spearheaded by the United Nations Foundation and music superstar Pharrell, the holiday was founded in 2012 and aims to raise awareness for worldwide economic growth. The Assembly Resolution states:

The General Assembly, conscious that the pursuit of happiness is a fundamental human goal, recognizing also the need for a more inclusive, equitable and balanced approach to economic growth that promotes sustainable development, poverty eradication, happiness and the well-being of all peoples, decides to proclaim March 20 the International Day of Happiness.

We fully agree that every human (and animal, really) deserves to be happy, and that it's a key element to overall growth and success. Grammy-winner Pharrell is getting behind this effort, thanks in large part to his hit song (and music video) "Happy."

So go out and do something that makes you, or someone close to you, happy on March 20. Take a walk in your neighborhood, buy a stranger a cup of coffee, call your grandma or cook your roommate dinner. Think about what in your everyday life makes you happy, and try to spread that joy to others.

Make sure you share your journey with us on social media, sharing the hashtag #MakeTodayHappy or #HappinessDay. Tag us on twitter (@celebrations), Instagram (@celebrations_com) or Facebook  so we can see how you have been celebrating being happy.

So spread the love, and #MakeToday ridiculously happy!
