Celebrate National Pet Owner's Day

Whether you own a mischievous pup, a finicky feline, a talking bird or something more exotic, you already know the joy, humor and work that goes into to loving a pet. My family's cat is a mix of playfulness (look how she chases the flashlight beam!) to frustration (is that another hairball?).

For all the effort and love that go into to owning an animal, we have National Pet Owner's Day on April 18. Consider it a day of thanks for choosing to be caring and responsible caretakers of our non-verbal family members.

Since our pets probably won't present any gifts or bake a cake in honor of this special day, we have to look for ways to celebrate being a pet owner. Here are a few ideas...

Check with local pet supply stores and online retailers for discounts and freebies on food, health needs and fun toys.

Treat yourself to a new accessory for your pet even if it is frivolous. For example, I would love cute food and water bowls for my cat. She doesn't care what they look like, but I think they would add color to our beige laundry room.

Take your pet out for a photo session, if you're up for it. My cat hisses at the first sight of the outdoors, but other pets, especially dogs, might enjoy the fresh air and attention. If it goes well, you will have a perfect memento from the day.

Even if you don't get a chance to celebrate in a tangible way, you can still enjoy a few laughs regarding your pet with this humorous list of pet owner antics.

You know you're a pet owner when...

  • your pet gets his own category on the family calendar.
  • you sign your pet's name to cards, gifts and invitations.
  • you have taken a day off to take care of your sick pet.
  • you pick a new home based on the accommodations it offers your pet.
  • your pet has had more doctor's visits -- or spa treatments -- than you.
  • you serve your pet a special meal for holidays and special occasions.
  • you have ever used your pet as a matchmaker.
  • your plan your weekends and vacations around your pet's schedule.
  • you have ever slept on the sofa so your dog or cat can have the bed.
  • you spend as much money on food and treats for your pet as you do your kids.

I may or may not be guilty of a few items on this list. If you are too, give yourself a big pat on the back this National Pet Owner's Day!
