Celebrate the Little Things in Life

I'm not sure if it's post-holiday blues or if this time of year just isn't so inspiring, but lately, life has been extremely hectic and a bit dramatic to say the least.

On my way to the subway this morning I was looking at my phone and saw the photo above - a snapshot I'd taken about 2 months ago walking home from work. It's the sun setting over Manhattan.

This photo I hadn't glanced at in many weeks seemed to have popped up when I needed it most, forcing me to stop and realize, I have a lot to be happy about. Despite things hitting a bit of a rough patch recently, there's so much that deserves some recognition for making the difficult times easier, the hard work worth it all.

No lack of holidays or gray weather are going to stop me from taking the time to celebrate the little things in life. You know, those things that don't necessarily register on your radar as being so important until they're not there anymore?

Here are my top 10 - make your own list and I promise, you'll find a reason to celebrate every day.

1. Coffee -- This elixir of my life, I owe so much to it. My happy mood in the morning that stops me from being a real grump, my 3 o'clock attention fixer at work and my go-to ingredient to take chocolate desserts from so good to great.

2. Speaking of dessert -- A sweet treat, be it cupcake, candy or milkshake, if you can, eat dessert first cause life is too short to not!

3. NYC -- It can bring you down and bring you right back up just as quickly. It's the most inspiring place I've ever been, always lived and never want to leave. I get to look right out my living room window at it, which is something that can always cheer me up.

4. Friends -- My truest friends are worth a parade and a half any day. I bet yours are, too. I've started letting them know that with weekly themed dinner parties complete with matching cocktails, and without the chaos of the holidays, it's easy to get them all in the same room at the same time!

5. My job -- So many of us complain about our jobs, but I really love mine. Sure there are stressed-filled days, but I can't gripe. It pays the bills in the funnest way I could ever hope for and am so fortunate to have it to get to everyday.

6. My Google Reader -- The inspiration my Google reader delivers to me has given me so many reasons to celebrate, especially by taking meals and making them a mini-celebration in and of themselves.

7. Wine -- I sip it, cook with it, get creative with left over bottles...and I have dish towels my Aunt sent me that say, "Wine a Bit, You'll Feel Better" and they always make me laugh.

8. Pandora Radio -- Music in general, but this site has a playlist to fit any and every mood, celebration I need it to and it's free.

9. My dogs -- I don't have kids, so I'm one of those dog people who cuddle in bed with her dogs. They're the furriest, slobberiest, sweetest things in life.

10. Love -- It's probably the most overlooked little thing in life. All those cheesy sayings - love is all you need, love conquers all, etc. - they're true. I've got an amazing family and husband I should toast at least 45 times a day.
