Celebrating Daughters - The Gems of Our Lives

With Daughter’s Day just around the corner, I took some time to reflect on what daughters add to our lives.

Daughters are the whimsical fairy princesses, who, with tutus and tiaras, twirl and spin their magic into our hearts. As women in training, they are observant, savvy, and often mature for their age.

They are the voyeurs in our lives, watching our every move, learning the tricks of the trade. They watch, like little apprentices as we prepare meals in the kitchen, offering to “help” as we attempt to beat those egg yolks and mash those potatoes.

Daughters listen intently to our conversations, learning the jargon associated with women’s book clubs and illicit phone conversations.

They watch as we put on our makeup and jewelry, in awe as Mommy transforms from drab to fab. And it is only a young daughter who can get away with creating her own versions of fashion, such as flamboyant feather boas paired with soccer shorts and opera length gloves.

Our little girls are the ones who can put Mrs. Cleaver to shame as they run their toy vacuums and dust their fine plastic china. They don their pink aprons with pride and whip up culinary delights, insisting we try their latest creations such as bacon, strawberry, cheese, hot dog pie. They want to spend every moment with Mom so they can grow up to be just like her. They imitate her walk and adopt her expressions, however aggravating it can be when those words come back to haunt her.

Eventually, the daughter grows up and the toy pots and pans are replaced with iPods and cell phones. She joins school activities and sports. She hangs out with friends. She has boyfriends. In time she goes off to college, paving her own way in this enigmatic world. The phone calls become less frequent, as do the visits back home. She’s a woman now, with high aspirations.

Days turn to years and the daughter begins her own life, with daughters of her own.  And that’s when it happens—that moment when she realizes the extraordinariness that is the relationship between a mother and daughter. And with that realization, comes a renewed sense of appreciation and admiration for the one she calls Mom.

Soon there is an uptick in the numbers of calls home. She’s looking for advice; the comfort of Mom’s words. However, unlike before, there is a mutual sharing of thoughts, as the relationship has transformed into one of equals.

The daughter, after all those years spent watching Mom in the kitchen, is now a master chef herself, and shares that knowledge with her first teacher. When she calls home to share her latest recipe it’s with great pride and a wry smile that she says, “I’ve created a new masterpiece. It’s called the low-fat bacon, strawberry, cheese, hot dog pie.”

Our daughters are gems, who we cultivate and polish. They are our little girls, our best friends, and our young apprentices to the trade that is womanhood. Without daughters, our world would be a little less frilly, a little less silly.

Remember to celebrate your own little apprentice on Daughter’s Day!
