Confetti Cupcake Toppers for a Fourth of July Party

For a fourth of July party, you can add a special touch to your dessert buffet with confetti cupcake toppers - an easy yet fun way to make your dessert spread seem even more festive!
It’s easy (and green!) to make your own confetti using recycled paper scraps. Wax paper is used to achieve the cool transparent star shape, and hot glue holds the confetti border.
- Red, white, blue, and metallic gold paper scraps
- Hot glue gun
- Wax Paper
- Wooden skewers
Step 1: First, you’ll make your own paper confetti. Using scraps of red, white, and blue paper, cut fringes down the side of the paper. Then, cut perpendicular to the fringes to make lots of tiny squares of paper.
Small confetti works best, so cut small fringes. Repeat with the other colors until you have about a half cup of confetti. (I also cut up some metallic gold/silver paper to add some shimmer to the mix.)
Step 2: Draw a simple star shape on a piece of wax paper (about 2” in size). Trace over the lines with a hot glue gun, and then sprinkle with the confetti. The hot glue dries very fast, so work in small sections at a time.
At the base of the star, attach a short wooden skewer (3-4”).
Step 3: Once the glue has dried and the confetti is set, tear the wax paper along the outside edges of the hot glue to tear the shape out of the wax paper. At this point, you may need to trim the confetti along the edges to enhance the star shape.
Step 4: Stick one decoration in each cupcake before serving. Another idea is to place a grouping of the toppers at the center of a round cake. It will be reminiscent of an explosion of July 4th fireworks!
