Couples Stocking Idea with Tutorial

What a pair! Here is a fun project that makes a perfect gift – or two – for a modern couple celebrating their first Christmas at home. A great wedding gift, housewarming present or holiday treat. Any cotton fabric will work – try non-traditional patterns and colors to mix things up.

  • Two Yards Cotton fabric – one each of two coordinating fabrics
  • One Yard fleece
  • Thread
  • Newspaper for pattern
  • Heavy or Medium weight iron on interfacing, one yard
  • Thick Ribbon, 16 inches, cut into two equal pieces
  • Marker
  • Scissors
  • Pinking Shears
  • Ruler
  • Sewing Machine
  • Pins
  • Iron
  • Needle

Step 1: Create your pattern. Lay out your newspaper –- one page of a standard paper (not unfolded) should be enough.

Draw a stocking shape on the paper using a marker. Freehand is fine, or use another stocking or boot as a template. Once you have a shape and size you like, cut out.

Step 2: Fold your first exterior fabric in half and lay your newspaper pattern on top. Pin the pattern to the fabric and cut out. You will have two stocking halves.

Repeat for the fleece as well. Fold your lining fabric the same way and place the pattern on one side. Pin the pattern to the lining, but extend the top by four inches. Cut out so that you have two lining halves, both four inches longer than your exterior fabric at the top, where the stocking opening will be.

Step 3: As with the fabric, fold your interfacing in half and affix the paper pattern to it. Cut out so that you have two halves. Following the manufacturer’s instructions, attach the interfacing to wrong side of each half of your exterior fabric. Cut two rectangles of interfacing --they should each be as wide as the top of the lining fabric and four inches long. With your iron, affix to the top of your lining fabric on the wrong side.

Step 4: Create a stocking sandwich. Place the right sides of the exterior fabric together so that the edges line up. Place each of the fleece halves against the wrong side of the exterior fabric on either side.

Finish by placing the lining fabric on the outside, right side out.  Line up all of the edges and pin. Sew along the edge, stopping where the excess lining fabric begins. Turn inside out, keeping the right sides of the lining together and sticking up beyond the exterior fabric.

Step 5: Place the stocking on a flat surface in front of you so that the toe is facing to the right.

Fold your ribbon in half to make a hanging loop, and place inside the top portion of the lining fabric, along the back edge where the lining meets the exterior fabric. The raw edges of the ribbon should stick out slightly. Sew straight up along the edge of the lining.

Step 6: Turn your stocking inside out. Trim the top of the lining fabric with pinking shears. Fold the lining cuff over the top of the exterior. Press to smooth out any wrinkles. Repeat steps two through six to create your second stocking, but be sure to use the exterior fabric for the lining and vice versa. You’ll now have two super cute stocking to give a friendly couple!
