Dinosaur Felt Applique Shirt for Boys

This homemade dinosaur shirt will be the talk of your next dinosaur-themed birthday bash! It requires minimal sewing skills and is a great project for the novice crafter.

The embroidered detail around the felt dinosaur will make it look like you spent hours on this shirt, when in reality, it will only take you about 30 minutes to create.

If making this for the birthday boy or girl, use an iron-on number in the center of the dinosaur to announce his or her age. You can purchase iron-on numbers at your local craft store or make one yourself.

  • White T-Shirt
  • Orange Felt
  • Heat’n Bond Ultra Hold Iron-On Adhesive (no-sew)
  • Fabric Scissors
  • Needle
  • Blue Embroidery Thread
  • Embroidery Needle
  • Fabric Scissors
  • Dinosaur Stencil (found online or at your local craft store)
  • Iron

Step 1: Iron Heat'n Bond onto a piece of orange felt. Trace the dinosaur stencil onto the back of the Heat n Bond. Cut the dinosaur out using fabric scissors.

Step 2: Remove the Heat'n Bond backing off of the dinosaur and stitch around the dinosaur with blue embroidery thread. See photo for an example.

Step 3: Iron the applique on the shirt according to the Heat’n Bond directions. I recommend placing a sheet on top of the applique before ironing.

Step 4 (optional): To add your child's age to the shirt, you can either buy iron-on numbers at your local craft store or make your own. If you go the DIY route, iron on Heat’n Bond Ultra Hold Iron-On Adhesive to a piece of felt. Cut out the number and iron it on to the dinosaur by following the instruction on the Heat’n Bond package.
