DIY Back to School Gift for Teacher

Create a back to school gift for the teacher to welcome the school year!

Though there might be some trepadation, the kids are probably more excited as they look forward to a new school year, a new teacher, and a new classroom.

Channel that excitement and have the kids craft a special present for the first day of school to give to their new teacher. They'll have a lot of fun making this cute and super easy "apple" gift for their teacher along with a custom card using the collage technique, but their teacher will certainly adore the gesture even more.

How to Make an Apple Treat Box

We love the sweet and sour red candies we use here, but fill this treat box with any sweet red treat for your teacher to enjoy.

small round favor box
1/2 yard red ribbon
sour cherry candies
silk leaf
adhesive tape

Step 1: Run a length of 2-sided adhesive tape around the top perimeter of the favor box, and adhere a piece of red ribbon.

Step 2: Fill the favor box full of the sour cherry candies. Cover with cellophane and tie tightly with the ribbon. Cut the excess cellophane at the top so it's about 1/2 inch above the ribbon. Slip a silk leaf underneath the ribbon.

How to Make a Decaupage Card

Craft a decaupage card in the form of an apple to pair with your teacher's sweet treat. Fill with positive messages for a "fruitful" year to come!

white tag or construction paper cut 5 1/2 X 11 inches
patterned scrapbook paper cut 4 3/4 inch square
solid color paper (green) cut 4 1/4 inch square
solid color paper (blue) cut 4 inch square
3 inch square piece of tag
old magazines

Step 1: Fold the 5 1/2 X 11 piece of white paper in half to make the card.

Step 2: With adhesive, glue the layers of patterned green and blue paper to the front of the card.

Step 3: Now you are ready to make the collage apple. Look through old magazines and cut snippets of red paper from the pictures you find. Apply adhesive to each scrap of red paper and apply it to the 3 inch square piece of tag. Cover the tag completely and don't worry about the pieces that extend over the edge.

Step 4: Turn the tag over and draw a nice round apple shape on the back. Cut the apple shape out.

Step 5: From old magazine pictures, cut out a stem and a green leaf. Glue the apple, stem and leaf to the front of the card and write a nice message to your new teacher!
