DIY Birthday Crown Craft

A birthday is cause for celebration, and the best way to celebrate is with a crown.

This simple -- and reusable -- birthday crown can be tailored for boys or girls of any age.

  • Foam crown form or crown cut from poster board
  • Embellishments
  • Craft Glue Dots® Roll

Step 1: Start with your crown -- we used a foam crown from the craft store, but you can also make your own from a piece of poster board. We like the foam version because it's more comfortable for little heads, and can be adjusted as your child grows.

Step 2: Use the Craft Glue Dots to affix decorations to the crown. The stars pictured here are meant for scrapbooks and come with adhesive on the back, but the Glue Dots are much stronger and will more readily withstand the wear and tear of a day of birthday partying. Simply stick the Craft Glue Dots where you want the decoration to go, peel the backing off, and add your embellishment. It's THAT easy. For girls, use faux jewels or flowers; for boys, dinosaurs or sports gear is always a hit. If you're making one crown for siblings to share, look for gender-neutral embellishments, like the stars shown here.

Step 3: You can temporarily personalize the crown by attaching the birthday child's name or age; cut letters or numbers from construction paper and affix them with Removable Glue Dots®; switch them out for the next kid or next birthday the same way.

But don't stop at making a crown for the birthday child -- crowns make great party favors, and decorating them is a simple party craft.

Give each birthday party guest a foam crown and some Glue Dots, provide them with a variety of embellishments and see what they create.

Unlike liquid glue, Glue Dots are mess free and require no dry time. Little party guests might need help getting the Glue Dots off the backing and onto their crown, but this is a project that even preschoolers can manage with very little adult assistance.

And how cute is a whole party of kids in crowns?
