DIY Bohemian Style Backdrop Decoration

This summer, throw an outdoor bohemian-style summer party! Boho style creates a non-fussy atmosphere that is artistic, casual, and eclectic.

Effortless and well-curated at the same time, this carefree and romantic look is the perfect setting for a beautiful and relaxing evening with friends.

A bohemian style party should be filled with layers of interesting textiles and moody lighting, and a backdrop is the first step in creating that setting. By draping patterned sheets and curtains, you’ll create an inexpensive, breezy backyard environment that is reminiscent of gypsy tents. Combined with strand lights, you’ll also get soft lighting to up the romantic atmosphere.

  • Rope
  • Sheer curtains
  • Patterned fabric
  • White Christmas lights

Step 1: String a strand of rope through a few sheer curtain panels. They can be any color; use what you have around the house! I used 5’ panels, but 8’ would be even better to really command the space.

Step 2: Tie the rope to two points outside at a height where the sheer panels can touch the ground. Make use of whatever you have available in your backyard—string them up from a pair of trees, a pergola, fencing, a deck etc. If you have a clothesline, you could forgo the rope altogether and use that. This will be the backdrop to your dinner party, so consider a space that is fairly level and suitable for your dining area.

Step 3: Take strands of white Christmas lights and drape them in large loops that reach from the rope to the ground, until they fill the length of the backdrop.

Step 4: Shop your house to gather some patterned fabrics. I used more curtain panels, but you could also use sheets or lightweight blankets that have interesting colors & patterns. Drape these over the rope as well, layered in amongst the Christmas lights.

Step 5: Plug in the Christmas lights and enjoy the breezy, romantic backdrop to your dinner party! Don’t forget bohemian style seating, eclectic place settings, or a romantic boho centerpiece!
