DIY Dinner Party Bamboo Table Runner

Throw an impressive dinner party on a dime by decorating with a DIY table runner that has the great natural texture of bamboo.

All you have to do is purchase an inexpensive bamboo or straw beach mat at a dollar store, and then cut it in half to make two custom table runners for just a few bucks.

To punch up the design, you can add a ribbon border of your choice and finish the raw edges. You can also paint your own bold black and white geometric pattern on the border to bring a modern touch to your tablescape.

This bamboo table runner is resistant to stains and easy to wipe up food spills, so it’s guaranteed to look great through many uses!

  • Bamboo beach mat
  • Scissors
  • Satin ribbon
  • Black paint
  • Mod Podge sealer
  • Hot glue gun

Step 1: Cut off the sewn border on the long sides of a bamboo mat.

Step 2: Then, cut the bamboo mat lengthwise down the middle to create two even halves. You will only need one half, but you can use the other to create a second table runner!

Step 3: Cut two long strips of white satin ribbon that are the length of the bamboo runner. I used 2.5” wide ribbon.

Step 4: Use a small paintbrush and black paint to cover the two pieces of ribbon with a random geometric pattern. Start with diagonal strokes across the width of the ribbon, and then fill in the gaps with more arbitrary lines until it is filled with random triangles and quadrilaterals.

Step 5: After both pieces of ribbon are painted, brush one coat of clear Mod Podge sealer over top. This will help to protect from food spills once in use.

Step 6: Once dry, fold each ribbon in half lengthwise. Then, fold them over the edge on each side of the bamboo runner, and attach with hot glue. Flip the runner and secure the ribbon on the backside as well.

Voila! Your beautiful table runner is ready to go!
